My parents had a cat named Bluesefur. She ran through a pan of blue paint in advance of an earthquake shortly before I was born. She was a good girl, considering she was a feral kitten my dad rescued from the middle of the road in the rain. She was a good girl.

One of my favorite details about this game is how it marks off ledges you can’t climb on with anti-pet spikes. Not only does it make sense in context of you playing as a cat, but it also feeds into the noticeable connection between the infected mites (Zurks) that chase you and the cat you play as. They make high pitched noises similar to a cat’s meow, they’re fast, and are capable of getting into places you wouldn’t expect them to. It’s possible that prior to the events of this game, the spikes were used as a line of defense against the Zurks to stop them from spreading to higher ground. These similarities would tie into why the robots initially fear you as you enter the safe zone, as they probably think of you as some kind of mutated Zurk that managed to breach their defenses.

Such a great game. It doesn’t tell you very much, but it leaves just enough bread crumbs to let you come up with your own interpretation.
