Menphina is the third character in FFXIV that I can draw parallels to my own character in my writing. And each one is more on the nose than the previous one. I hate it. None of it is intentional either. I used no references for anything when designing my characters or their backstories. Hell, I wasn’t even aware of the deeper lore surrounding the Twelve.

The first character I drew parallel to was Chai Nuzz in Shadowbringers. My main character is also a nobleman with a prestigious background in the crafts with a prickly disposition at first blush, but is really a kind-hearted softie after you get to know him. He, too, is pushed into a position of political power by being in the right place at the right time. The difference being that instead of being the one everyone liked for an election, he was shooed into the position by his relationship status to the *next* character I’m about to talk about.

The second is a phoenix harpy that is the demigoddess of a cacophony of harpies, being the daughter of one of the high priestesses and their phoenix god (whose name I _did_ more or less take from XIV, Pharos). I knew that Azeyma was a goddess of the flame of life, but I hadn’t seen any art depicting her until I ran Aglaia and I immediately realized “Aw shit, she’s a phoenix, too.” Sure, it’s not uncommon for that trope to be used, but it still bugs me that the fiery impassioned goddess hit so close to home for my own creativity.

AND THEN THERE’S MENPHINA! An ice goddess that takes the form of a young girl, depicted here with a singular wing. The daughter of the previous two characters is a harpy, as you would expect, and the way her father’s inherent powers interacted with her mother’s, she developed into an ice elemental. I take the wing as a parallel to how my character’s parents are a bird woman and a dragonborn. Both are cheerful and a bit naïve. Not only that, but both girls have a pet. I commissioned a piece of art of this third character from an artist that did “Add a pokemon” thing with the commission, and I gave her an Alolan vulpix. I liked the idea of that and decided to give her a pet fox as canon. I don’t have a reason for her fox, per se, like Menphina has for having Dalamud, but it’s a freaky parallel.

I had been writing the first character off and on (mostly off) for about ten years, and really only started nailing down an actual backstory for him in the past three years. The second I introduced two years or so ago into the fold. The third, about a year and a half ago. So I wasn’t even playing FFXIV at the time. Completely oblivious to the story of Shadowbringers and unaware of the lore of the gods. I know I’m whining about nothing, and never had any intentions of trying to be similar to this game’s story, but it’s just so weird how half of my main cast is so similar to facets from it/
