I love that the factory is called “Neco Corp” and the game has a very Japanese aesthetic since Neko in Japanese means cat

(a few had RIP next to their names…) at 1:48:20 – You did notice them on the list but didn’t join the dots as to WHY the names were there – of course they were mocapped! lol

My head canon:
Something bad happened, probably manmade, and humans locked themselves in the walled city. Then, the Zurks appeared, who originally only ate organic matter and humans faced extinction once again, so they uploaded themselves into their companions, creating a singularity (the moment robots “gained souls” as the game put it) which is why the robots down in the city were so different than the ones that didn’t live in the city.
A lot of time passed, the outside world recovered and the Zurks evolved to eat metal and, once again, the humans in their companion bodies faced mortal danger now from inside their shelter so they had to find a way to get to the outside.

It’s essentially a story about humans fucking things up, fleeing from it and adapting to their new environment only to repeat that cycle again and again. It’s kind of fatalistic, since the horrible things happen, while also being optimistic in the sense that humans always overcome the fuckups they themselves created.
