Sometimes having words in the context of a sentence makes them easier to read. More so in japanese than English i think though. Especially kanji.
Like maybe you can’t read 食べる, but if it’s in a sentence with recognizable food words like パン, you could probably figure it out.

In all seriousness, single words often aren’t enough to pin down a language. If I wrote “are”, “sore” or “sake” by themselves, you wouldn’t know whether I meant the English word or the Japanese one. So I can TOTALLY see a non-native English speaker with awareness of French pronunciation screwing up “paste” on its own. Especially in a game with mixed English and Romaji.

it can be easier with a full sentence because even if you don’t know a word you may be able to guess from context. when it’s just a single word if you don’t know it you’re screwed.

That reminds me of kindergarten where I was a prodigy in every subject but thought paste meant cut because there were dotted lines around where we were supposed to glue something on so I had to redo the worksheet
