Pulling the plug off HoloCN wasn’t even directly caused by the initial incident, don’t forget that.
It was the continued harassment by hyper nationalists, that left Cover with no choice but to leave.
At first Cover suspended both ‘chama and Coco for _weeks_ to calm down the riots, expecting people to chill over time. The hyper CN nationalists didn’t stop the harassment.
Then the antis started harassing **anyone** showing any sort of support or empathy towards Coco/Haachama, endlessly spamming their chat, comments, tweets, hashtags.
So Cover quarantined Coco and Haachama, thinking that maybe the CN antis would eventually chill and stop the harassment.
They never stopped. Even completely distant, unrelated Hololive talents saw their livestreams attacked simply because they were affiliated with Hololive. They had to close down live chats, limit them to members-only, and even then moderators had to bans hundreds of antis every stream.
The harassment never stopped. At this point, Cover had no other option than leave the country altogether: even wildly beloved talents like Aqua or Fubuki (huge following in CN) were being raided, slandered and harassed on Bilibili, tearing the fanbases apart between core Hololive fans and hyper nationalists.
The HoloCN branch died because the CN nationalists just can’t control themselves.
What about Nijisanji? They have a CN branch right?
Nope, it’s a joint-venture called VirtuaReal, founded and managed by Bilibili itself, Anycolor only having a limited financial stake in the company.
Bilibili being a major chinese company, it’s got political commissars at all key positions and boards, so the 45 VirtuaReal talents are closely monitored by the CCP. The reason why it hasn’t been cancelled yet over similar non-sense is simple: the hyper nationalists circles have been told by CCP cadres to keep quiet and stand guard, the party has it under control, so the militants are holding back and behaving properly.
The millisecond the party unleash them though, the Nijisanji talents will get the same deluge of harassment, and Bilibili will split VirtuaReal from Anycolor.
That’s how precarious it is to develop your business in CN: at any moment you can be forced out of the country.
what an awful take massive L
China is a liability though closing down the CN branch was the best thing hololive ever did. I feel bad for some of the talents but China is just crazy.
Pippa social credit score not going up any time after this.
Imagine idolizing someone who rallied with the CCP to terminate Coco and Haachama. Yipes.
Though we regrettably lost Yogiri and Spade Echo, I’m so happy Hololive isn’t associated with China anymore.
Weren’t those talents attacking Coco and helping antis? I thought that was the problem.
Didn’t Artia both like the punishment tweet, and did a Wolf Warrior watch-a-along soon after the events?
I seriously don’t want to fall to misinformation but those are huge red flags for me.
EDIT: Also proudly recalling Taiwan’s elections spam campaign in 2016.
The moral of the hololive cn story is don’t do business in China. The CCP will find a way to f*** you
Irony is that a lot of Chinese girls want to leave China at the drop of the hat and aren’t that nationalistic. It’s always the incel males that are super nationalistic.
Blame the chinese anties and their obsession with Taiwan.
I bet China just wanted to dominate the chinese market for vtubers. They themself have a lot of them and great ones too like Serafina but when it comes to such opportunity to make tons of money they just play dirty when a company from overseas especially one from a country they have a bad history with, arrives and join their market and that cheap excuse with Taiwan was just bullshit from those mainland bots cuz if that’s a big deal why only Coco and Cover but no one else was affected so much by it.
I miss Coco. I feel like having no restrictions kinda made her boring. She was really good at skirting the line. Without the gimmick shes kind of just an average female streamer tha happens to have a 2D avatar
I hate this take, but won’t bother as my country of philippines is also under attempted colonization by the mainlanders and I must remain aware of it.
That was staged
Nah, dig out the snakes or you’ll inevitably get bitten
Also I think it’s worth mentioning that it’s entirely understandable that Cover did axe HL CN, better to take the short term loss and pull out of that market entirely than to let them continue to be used as leverage and hostages against you.
Halolive Taiwan when?
Her oshi is Artia? No wonder her Hololive audition get rejected.
“It’s crazy being a fan” is so true. I never understood idol culture until I fell down the vtuber rabbit hole
if we see it now, Cover decision to leave China is very accurate. since Bilibili (CN streaming platform)demand all the IRL data about the Vtuber that want to stream there. imagine giving your personal data to CCP. they can use those data to strangle Cover neck at a later time
now that I think about it, the reason why holo en took so long to get a new wave is probably somewhere down the line they would dug up all of the internet history of the possible candidate and see if something like this is in their history. I only see two clips of her and Im already glad she didn’t make it, while she is fun to watch the possibility of her doing the shenanigan something like niji en situation before is there, better stop it right now than sorry later.
