At first I believed Nanase was just a stuck up… You know, however as we saw she’s actually kind so it’s all most likely possession which brought her down.

I’m quite confident that Shino is not the antagonist. I also think that there are 3 spirits: Shino, the MC and the spirit of the forest.

Theory#1
The MC is the ghost of the art room. She was driven mad by the same spirit that corrupts/possess nanase or even a victim of possess nanase like the missing people in the other class which had connections with nanase (hinted in the 3d version). Wanting a better ending, she haunts the school and became the transfer student. The landslide was both due to deforestation and the MC realizing the truth about herself by returning to the art room. Their souls, except for Shino and the MC, are trapped in the school. She is trying to wake up the MC by “going home” and accepting what happened.

Theory #2
The present era is all an illusion/fake reality that the MC made to cope with the incident. That is why they seem “doll-like” because they’re not real. The MC is haunting the school (maybe abandoned after the incident) as she feels guilty about the incident. Shino, another spirit, is trying to bring the MC back to reality.

Theory #3
It’s like corpse party in which there is a different dimension in the school. Their souls are trapped with corrupted nanase haunting the place. Sora is the only one that can connect with the real world. She waited for the transfer student to reappear and bring her to the other dimension to hopefully fix everything.

Anyways, I’m really enjoying this series. The voice acting is top notch and the bgm is great. Looking forward for the next installments 😍
