I never understood the hook of these Vtubers, now I know parasocialism… guess im living in a rock then
Damn, if only someone made an anime series about going over the edge on a possible unhealthy aspect of life
I know we take a hard stance towards the parasocial obsessive fans but i feel really bad for them that it hurts to see the shit they do. Like when I see people donating 100’s of $ to someone for the hope they will say their name, it hurts my stomach to watch. And i know it’s a business and they need to get paid but when I see some Vtubers let them continue to do it I do get annoyed at them, I remember a Vtuber I forgot who it was but they turned off Superchats because they said if you want to support me membership and you showing up is enough and i really respected that, not enough to remember their names it seems though 😭
Half the internet: I want a relationship with a vtuber!
Me: internet animu grills are funny but I am keeping them at a safe distance… At gun point if necessary. And that won’t even be enough with some of them.
Why the fuck this weeb shit in my recommendation…
what you said about parasocialism starting with the vtuber reminded me of the last time i watched a wave debut (i watched all luxiem debut streams for like a week) and i remember Mysta talking about how he had become so nervous after his first stream that he was shaking, had forgotten to drink water, etc. and that he relied a lot on the reassurance of the chatters and was seeking their validation A LOT during those debut streams. i think this open vulnerability is part of the recipe for creating strong parasocial bonds from fans but he definitely wasnt acting or playing up how nervous and stressed and insecure he was about being liked during his debut. so it’s definitely a 2-way relationship even when it’s parasocial on both sides.
*edit* outside of the vtuber community i also noticed that youtubers with low self esteem tend to be quite vulnerable to this effect as well. i was a low-to-mid-key fan of corpse husband for a few years (i still like him but my tastes in content changed…? but parasocially, I LIKE HIM, i relate to him) and that dude has struggled with VERY low self esteem and other mental health issues for a long time. as his channel got more popular and more girls (and guys) were simping for him i felt like he actually got sucked into that parasocial exchange of seeking validation from the fans more and more and more, this is just my impression of course, but his self esteem and his mental health issues have always been bad and his life seems like it’s a lot more fucked up than the mild (by comparison) social anxiety disorder symptoms that Mysta expressed having.
just like with the Mysta debut streams tho, that Corpse was openly vulnerable about this is actually what increased MY parasocial investment in him as i have dealt with these issues on the level that Corpse does/has as well, but i dont have an audience to engage in parasocial relationships with. if i was a creator with public platform, i am certain that i would fall into this trap and quickly become parasocially dependent on my audience, it is something i have often thought about as i did actually have that opportunity at one time in my life.
Nice use of I Really Want to Stay at Your House at the end there.
I don’t get this obsession with talking about ‘parasocial relationships’ the vtuber community has gotten into as of late. This kind of thing has been a documented problem for celebrities around the world since forever. There’s always been and always will be mentally ill people out there who fixate on personalities to unhealthy degrees. The only real difference when it comes to vtubers is the sheer amount of the talents themselves (both corporate and indie) that lean into that fixation. When talents use GFE, coomer baiting, trauma dumping, etc to garner an audience, how is it not unexpected that at least some of that audience is going to draw heavily on that? Chat reflects the streamer after all.
I think my parasocialism has changed a little, post Sana Graduation. I never wanted to have a romantic relationship with any of them but I did put them on a pedestal as someone I relied on for emotional support. Learning more about Sana’s back issues, Ina’s fatigue and Gura’s mental health made them more human to me.
I still wouldn’t called it entirely healthy. I went from wanting to be there to support Ina in her hardships, to wanting someone else who can better be there for Ina to support her.
Basically my parasocialism is I’m hoping Ina has a partner/spouse in her life to prevent her from constantly working herself to illness.
Oh boi, I didn’t expect a bit of one of my clips appearing in this video.
Anyway, keep up the good work. Your videos are always entertaining and touch on very interesting topics.
I’ve really can’t forgive two things of parasocial relationships.
1: I can’t forgive some industries not just Vtubers but also J-Pop and K-pop for controlling their lives and not making disclaimers of idols private lives especially being in relationship(poor Minami Minegishi of AKB48 shaved her hair after bein demoted for just having a boyfriend)
2: I can’t forgive fans not understanding their private lives and not understanding why they cannot marry them for just being a fan(especially the fans of Hololive EN who feel enranged for collabing Holostars EN which I thought this Para thing only exclusive in Japan)
Everyone’s mentioning Nene, but I think Polka’s system is even more genius. Though she probably doesn’t remember about it. “Sure, you’re all married to me. But also to each other”. She put us into a mutual parasocial relationship with other fans.
Actually a really good video. Nobody highlights how nuanced this kind of situation is. There’s a lot more involved than just the black and white “good/bad” that people often lean towards. Parasocialism done right can be healthy and helpful to both viewers and creators. But many people end up destroying themselves in the process.
I feel like when it comes to superchats there should be a feature for streamers to reject the money from them.
It’s gotta feel fucking gross taking money from the people who trauma dump on them.
Parasocialism is when the vtuber does stuff. And it’s more parasocialist the more stuff she does. And when the vtuber does a lot of stuff, it’s paracommunism!
Never been in the vtuber hole that much, i can’t really watch their streams or even their clips so i can’t say much from experience. But one thing is clear, this parasocialism stems from the idealism of the viewer’s alternate reality that’s formed the more they interact with the vtuber, in hopes that it’ll eventually bring their inner fantasy into fruition.
In a parasocial individual’s mind the more money, time and efforts they put into their figure of praise i.e their idol, the closer they’ll get to their main goal. They’re willing to do whatever it takes and blind themselves to reality itself because they see a real possibility in what they do. And it’s nigh impossible to snap out of that mentality once you get into it, since it only spirals downwards until you reach dead end in a terrible event.
Focus on your life and stay grounded to earth, don’t let yourself slip into fantasy.
Remember, do not donate beyond your ability to support yourself.
In my opinion, if you start tracking your oshi’s menstrual cycle, you’ve gone too far.
Lamy loves me
Remember that parasocial relationships aren’t always ideal ok peeps?
Especially considering that all the hololive girls are MY wives, so hands off (ok fine I’ll leave out Risu so that Nousagi doesn’t come after me)
