To me, Vtubers are always like the artists that sit around in a city hoping for some change, just in the digital space and the street corner being Youtube.
There are great artists and personalities that are waiting to be discovered, and Vtubers found a great way to get discovered.
Your video kinda reminds me of a vid made by a vtuber called Yam Koumori a few weeks ago, points are really similar and I can see the shared vision on the whole topic, however, I see a difference in how the video got received on her end.
Since she’s a vtuber people treated her like she should be grateful for gachis, and she was envious of not having those in the first place.
It’s the parasocialism in people talking and feeling called out by someone they don’t think it’s adequate to be called out by. As you mentioned, when people get parasocial it can take a massive hit to the streamer’s mental health since every time they break the image someone had of them on their mind they get hate for it. We shouldn’t blame vtubers who want nothing to do with that since they’re witnessing the results of letting their audience do whatever they please, and that’s what happened to her, she got a considerable amount of comments calling her biased for not wanting to play into the parasocial game, and I think it’s something to think about as a community.
“…Is the moment you start to slip on the edge…”
Music playing: I really wanna stay at your house
Dude that’s too sad
i need a drink nene husband number42069
Its more fun when the vtuber embraces friends only mode or flat calls out simps and calls chat names. Feels more genuine than a idol trying to be “mine”
You just had to make me cry with that Cyberpunk song at the end, had you?
It would benefit the community if some people understood that their oshi is essentially an anime George Carlin, and not some friend of theirs
I like how most of the youtubers I watch are talking about parasocial relationships
I was always a big problem for Entertainers
i can’t make claims on what’s worse is it Vtubers or non Vtubers because I just don’t have the data to back it up
but i can imagine both can be as bad
The reason as to why my parasocialism isn’t that bad(probably) is
1. I fucking hate the idea of dating, so instantly no weird fantasies
2. I don’t get out of my way to get to know the characters/talents’ on a simulated “personal” level
Lmao if you ask me what my oshi likes i’ll probably give you one word answers
I just like the interactions, their jokes, and their voices lmao
For my case my favorite has to be ollie,
She’s like that one girl that everyone wants to be friends with, why? cus she’s just too damn kind.
Do i know her fav color, her fav food, her hobbies, nope. I just need her for my serotonin and dopamine;
sounds harsh asf but what I’m saying is those are the boundaries that I set.
even before stepping foot into the Vtuber hellhole/rabithole, I was already a firm believer of you are entitled to do what makes you happy.
whether it’s colabing with Niji, colabing with stars, playing apex everyday for 2 months straight, idc, as long as she’s happy doing it
I will never sexualize my oshi’s(they’re real people behind the vtuber veil), I do appreciate some good R34 but I don’t actively search and fantasize them, but..
I do tbh utilize some aspects of it when(I have adhd, hard to sleep) my mind is racing around jumping from topic to topic on the bed, i sometimes when idk what to think about, I’ll just force myself to fantasize about wholesome shit with my oshi. Somehow in some weird fucking way, it’ll calm me down a lot LMAO
I consider myself quite safe in terms of parasocialism,
from experience i can say, being a bit crazy for someone is a slippery slope
exponentially so for people that you literally don’t know.
I’m wholeheartedly fine with them not knowing me, but I do wholeheartedly love and support them.
they’re cool asf, how can I not like them.
THEY’RE SO FUCKING COOL AUHSLDUFLDSLFFDSL:SFKAIWDA”NVSLN>CLSDFH
THEY’RE SOOO COOOOLLL AND CUTTEEEE UGHHGHGKLJDGHS
fuck. I love them so much, they’re just so NOT perfect i love it.
If i have to do a comparison it’s like my love for cute animals, oddly similar.
edit : now i get why they’re called idols, now i get the whole fucking idol thing, so cooooooll
you played i really wanna stay at your house in the end of the video
nice of you to watch edgerunners
cool edgerunners references too in the video
falling over the edge
staying on the edge and so on
great video
TL:DR of the video:
Give the streamer your money, follow blindly, and don’t ask for shit.
This is an important topic. Thank you for making this video, my guy.
There is no problem with the concept on itself.
The problem is mentally ill or autistic people that take it too far.
Not that they are bad, but those dudes need help.
Hopefully they find it.
I’m still pissed to this day that you called Ame talentless, your vocabulary needs more work, and you need to pick your words more carefully.
Honestly, parasocial behavior gets nuts when you consider politics, also people like Anita Sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn who built fame on claiming to be victims. Most of the random people you would see in your own mentions if you’re even going to talk about gamergate, are more into defending a single person and consider themselves a valued martyr because they face quite a bit doing the stuff. The thing is they don’t realize how parasocial their behavior is, they most of the time don’t even know the people they’re defending. It gets crazy because it’s kind of like Christianity where people think God has to be defended 24/7, the double-edged sword of this is even the Bible would say that God doesn’t like to be misrepresented. A lot of people would would defend their own religion in this case Christians misrepresent God. Which has me questioning, should we do the same for humans and it’s consider that not everything we say in defense of them is going to be a respect of them.
I don’t care what your argument is, I don’t want you collabing with males depressed nousagi >:(
2:00 at that moment I expected max0r’s face appearing slightly
My views on this are a bit weird but hopefully i can explain myself properly:
1. I don’t get the whole entertainer cope, who the fuck would like to be treated like a dancing monkey to millions of people and not someone on their level that they can be friendly/more towards
2. Fans have already dated/married their “Entertainer”/Idol a lot, the most famous case everyone mentions is pewdiepie, but there’s a lot more and a lot of them are female, thus i ask, why shouldn’t a gachi try to go for it? “You don’t know them” Yeah and neither do the people that fall in love at first sight yet that is seen as socially acceptable, it just seems ultra weird to me, hell quite a lot of J-Idols end up dating a fan when they quit.
3.The community itself is so obssesed with kicking parasocials out they literally become more unhinged than the worst one, and at this point i can hear the clock ticking on it becoming another issue in the future.
With this i am not saying going over the edge is healthy or should be greeted with applause, it can very much end your life. I just simply don’t understand this whole nonsense of thinking the talent is above the fans when both fan and talent are the same thing at the end of the day: A bunch of dumbasses behind a pc screen, nothing more and nothing less.
Kpop fans would understand this struggle
If more people see these CONTENT CREATORS as just that, I think society would have been better. Would these fans even be simping for these characters had they known their real faces? I just hope it doesn’t end up being another Dream face reveal drama
I lowkey stupidly didn’t think that when getting into vtubers, I’d experience the same fans as avid kpop stans when I was newly into kpop, but boy was I sadly wrong 😭 Unhealthy obsessions are the same and present anywhere… This is actually the reason why I avoid some vtubers, and left streams cause of how some people act. It’s cringey ngl and I feel more sad than anything for both parties (more so on the vtubers/idols)…
Really great video though and I’m glad it’s being talked about. There’s a fine balance and it’s definitely hard to maintain and maybe even see when well, the very idea of idols flourishes on parasocial relationships no matter how deep 💀
