Wait with the last background song is Depressed Nousagi telling us that he wants to come to our house or is that parasocial relationships talking?
if you think parasocialism is gfe and bfe then you dont know what you are talking about
Bro really called himself out 😂
Vtubers are like Nintendogs. You stop in to check what they’re up to, cash in a redeem to make sure they drink water, eat, and/or stretch, the. Log out after you’ve had your fun
I’m 2 months clean of watching vtubers. I had to cut them out cold turkey because I would fall back into a destructive life again: Not exercising, not focusing on hygiene, spending copious amounts of money donating, and not going outside. After I quit watching, I’m doing a lot better in life. Im not angry at the talents, or the agencies. I just had to really look at myself and current situation. It was really difficult to quit watching, but I had to if I wanted to live. For some people, like me, vtubers are dangerous. Really know yourself and decide what is best for you.
Mannn I really want to deep dive in the word relationships (that word alone period!) but people don’t care for real for real. I can’t help but think about the people that have KILLED themselves over parasocial relationships alone, it’s SAD. you may ask how could I even know this?Bro People die every day, quite possibly every minute, and it’s impossible to know the reason unless THEY themselves explain, which leads to more sad news because the dead don’t speak. I’m venting now but yea, the world all fucked up and like many of us, as much as we don’t want to admit, don’t make things any better for those around us.
I think an underappreciated fact is that fandom actually *can* become real friendship, though it’s only a tiny fraction of the time. For fans of streamers, channel regulars can become moderators, and moderators can become friends. Deranged stalkers aren’t generally chosen as moderators, but people with an unhealthy level of parasocialism can fantasize about that path for themselves.
Another path is streamers who were unknowingly fans of one another. Ironmouse was a huge fan of Nyanners, and vice versa. Once they got big and actually met, they became best friends. Or maybe a streamer notices a very small creator, likes their content, and starts promoting them. Someone with an unhealthy obsession might imagine that path for themselves; “oh, maybe if I become a streamer she’ll notice me…”
I sometimes wonder if the public interactions between streamers and fans make parasocialism a bigger problem, or just a more visible one, or a combination of the two… We generally don’t see the obsessed fan letters from fans to traditional celebrities. I mean, there was a guy who saw Taxi Driver then shot the President of the United States. Vtuber obsession hasn’t gotten that bad yet…
That opening is the sounds of a person who did their homework lmao.
Wasn’t sure why I was getting watery eyes while you were just talking facts… Then I realized that you were playing the “I really want to stay at your house” instrumental in the background, you sneaky bastard manipulating my heart strings like that, great video btw.
Thank you for forming what is basically my exact opinion on parasocialism into a video. I’m glad someone with talent in content creation shares my opinions on this lol
Edit: ‘CAUSE I REALLY WANNA STAY AT YOUR HOUSE
Quite wild to me that, vtubing which has so many tiers of separation between streamer and viewer, are getting the worst cases when it comes to Parasocialism… some wild people out there, no wonder some shut that down real quick, but the others ended up suffering in the long run (Rushia for example)
Parasocialism in the vtuber sphere feels like the dreaded crossover between our western understanding of parasocial relationships and the unhealthy and indescribably toxic idol culture from Japan. I feel like a part of the responsibility falls onto the creator to draw clear lines and avoid any sort of behavior or interaction that’d push people towards delusions and the deep end, especially during the earlier phases when their community is still forming, but still, the inherent problem is still with those disgusting people who live in their own alternate realities and are entitled enough to demand that the creator caters to their immersion in said alternate reality.
Another banger video. Keep up the great work my dude.
Two words – Bjork stalker. THE textbook loon that went off the deep end of parasocialism. Every time I think back on his suicide video and how his head looks like a giant swollen zit in it, I reevaluate how I feel about content creators.
Just don’t be like that. Maintain healthy viewer relationships. Don’t be the giant zit.
Musically tying parasocial obsession to cyber psychosis was a top tier move.
so I don’t have a horse in this race, but it’s interesting how people keep burying the meaning of an “act” further into the ground to the point it means nothing.
if you live, sleep and breath something usually that means you ere “it.”
but by these extreme definitions, isn’t that person you know just putting on an “act” as your friend, or your husband.
if I greet someone as a wife everyday because… I have the damn ring, how is that not an “act”?
and if EVERYTHING is an act then why are we even talking, yeah?
Well, i always had a stance that all social interactions are by essence something parasocial because we project our thoughts onto the person we talk to and they themselves project what they want to appear like. To me it’s more of a managing expectation level that just applies even more if the interaction is of a more asymmetric level/nature.
I feel something potentially missing on the video is the difference between larger and smaller communities and how that could play into the dynamic of attachment on both sides.
As far as I’m concerned, I’m definitely on the gachi side but I kept a sense of reality.
Watching my oshi brings me a lot of joy and got me back into thinking about the future which gave me motivation to go and be accepted into a training course.
And I’m glad I can be there to give her my support and to cheer for her as she writes her own story with her own hands. Without me being a possessive jerk throwing tantrums when she suddenly interacts with a male fan or through a collab, and if she finds a partner in her love life and mentions it, I’ll just be glad she has one more source of happiness.

He’s becoming self aware.. Hand him more liquor!
I’m just glad I’m a very unsocial person due to my condition so I can happily enjoy content by vtubers, have a good laugh about their shenanigans and at the end of the day I can turn off my PC and go to sleep without thinking about people I only know through their voices. Sometimes a curse can be a blessing.
…oh, and of course without a single penny donated.
When a content creator and their fanbase start getting a little too dependant, they should use the ultimate ID technique:
