I have done my study on parasocial relationship as a psychology student it can be really bad in some cases and terrible hard as sh*t to fix sometimes
As you said it can be good if kept in check but it can spiral out of control if not careful
In truth I am also in a parasocial relationship with some small streams and I have to keep it all in check.
I love watching them, hanging out with them and lol playing with them but gota maintain and balance my self

I really enjoy watching vtubers and am proud to call myself a fan but also know its all for entertainment so it boggles my mind when I see people just go off the deep end. Videos like this are really great because it lets you step back and look at things from an outside view. Keep up the good work Nousagi!

To clarify at 7:14, the Reimu drama isn’t related to his mental health. If anything, it has more to do with HER mental health after the attacks. His extended break and professional help happened because he is a workaholic who became one due to various factors (which at this moment, he said the diagnosis from his first appointment are still to be revealed) that led him into unhealthy habits, which in turn feed into his own mental health issues, leading to burnout and stress. He did seek help AFTER the Reimu incident, and it could have something to do with that, but as far as I know, there is no causation.
Still in this topic, a lot of streamers (not just in Nijisanji) are overworked workaholics with building up stress and no guidance, and Vox’s entire “health arc” is also aligning with his desire to incentivize both viewers and coworkers to also seek help for anything that goes with them behind the scenes.

I could be wrong, though!

Parasocial relationship is fine. If it is made with a barrier in mind. But man… Crazy People wanted to break that barrier.

I think people need to be aware of how much they delude themselves, and that the avatar has a person playing its role, no matter how far from character they stray. Like how too much food leads to obesity, too much delusion leads to a fading grip on reality. It’s not a big problem with a minority, but when part of the industry is supported by these deluded people…. Hoo boy.

How can we differentiate parasocialism from empathy?

It is all an act sure but what about the genuine panic and borderline suicidal depression? Or the times they are indeed grateful or they did feel the stress weighing down on them?

Like now i cant even tell if im at the deep end anymore if i did genuine felt so sad when rushia and even coco months prior left

The turama dumping I never got. I understand not having other people to talk to, but to throw your problems out in public for hundreds if not thousands to see and judge… nah. I enjoy encouragement, I love getting a few kind words buut prompting them over my own personal issues feels weird and performative.

To me vtubers are like videogames. A form of escapism, something that keeps me sane and occupied. I don’t expect anything from them beyond the entertainment they provide. If I got overly attached that would be on me.

In my case, I’m deep into parasocial relationship that I bounce back out from it. I’m so in love with them that I wish nothing bad ever happen to them. And then bad thoughts came. Just the thought of her graduate one day already ruin my entire day. Now I just casually enjoying vtubers, don’t need to check up their stream schedule so that I won’t miss their stream.

Maybe I’m just a poser takodachi now but if priestess is happily streaming then all is right for me.
