It really remains to be seen how much of a fanbase a hololive talent retains after leaving the company because it hasn’t happened very often yet. In two of the three cases of talents leaving (not including the dissolution of the CN branch, and I’m not versed enough with any of the holostars cases), they continued on as their previous streamer identities and the majority of their fans followed with them, with the third not seemingly wishing to continue as a vTuber or streamer, but to pursue her illustrator career. It remains to be seen how this will work in the future as more of the talents inevitably decide to retire.
However, several of the talents continue on with their previous activities at the same time, if they wish to juggle both, and in most cases, their hololive fans are there as well. So when they leave, many of their fans will also likely follow, and while the audience will inevitably be smaller than their previous one, if they wish to continue streaming, then they have a built in audience as well as plenty of experience.
Plenty of these women are also college students and not all may wish to continue this as a career.
The outside identity isn’t really a big secret (it’s quite easy to find out if you wish to look and sometimes the Youtube algorithm will spoil it even if you don’t want to know) it’s just not directly talked about. The agency doesn’t own the talent or even the character since most of that comes from the talent, just the model.
Thanks for the stream; it’s always delightful to see the reaction of those outside of the fandom.
Regarding anonymity, several Hololive members have “open secret” alternate identities, although with very few exceptions these are also screen names. I know about several of them because of the youtube algorithm and recognising voices on recommended videos.
Three vtubers who have left Hololive that Iknow about have made new (or continued old, pre-Hololive) channels and brought a lot of their fan base with them. When you have been a Hololive streamer for a bit it’s really easy to recognise a new character as the same person, even if you can’t ever say so.
2:23:44 Wait! Are you saying VTubers aren’t real?! 😱
Yeah, I don’t know a lot about Japanese HoloLive either, beyond having seen a lot of clips of some of the bigger personalities. Mostly Korone, Subaru, Pekora, and Marine.
So in lieu of that… EN mascots! Most EN members have a cute mascot character aside from the ones representing their fans, such as Ame’s dog Bubba. The exception is Ina: on the occasion it matters, takodachis pull double duty in that role. Why am I bringing it up here? Because two of them made their first appearance in this episode! Kronii’s snake Boros on the Haste Up Stamp, and Baelz’s rat Mr. Squeaks upside-down on the Reverse Stamp!
It’s tempting to think of them as pets, but some sharply defy this classification. Calli’s is Death-sensei, a small, cute incarnation (Representation? Avatar?) of her teacher, the original Grim Reaper. Mr. Squeaks claims to be Bae’s guardian, and Nemu would tell you she’s Fauna’s captive.
Yeah, it’s a little disappointing that Haachama didn’t get different art. While they are two minds in one body, from what I’ve seen there’s a precedent that could have been utilized: Haato usually has the side tail and wears blue and white, while Haachama tends to have twintails and wears black and red. Not that they’d normally change clothes when they swap in the middle of a stream.
Regarding the “Only benefitial until they leave” thing, it’s only that way in theory and for small agency Vtubers, Hololive Vtubers have such a massive audience that the community makes the connection almost immediately, and even if that Vtuber can’t talk about it, the fans very quickly follow that Vtuber, they also have the benefit that Hololive graduations / retiring is very uncommon, so they are quite monumental events in the Vtuber community whenever one does happen. Also Hololive talents can continue working on other stuff even while still being on Hololive, for example Calli still pumps out music outside of her role as Calli without any problem, COVER (The company behind Hololive) thankfully isn’t a “black company” from what the talents, current and previous, have said.
Regarding the rant around 2:10:00 ish regarding “fame/experience/general resume” leaving with a Hololive vtuber’s graduation, devoted fans will always find a way to follow their fav’s. The individual is not allowed to say “hey, I used to be X”, but the fans know. For example, I still follow Kiryu Coco and Tsukumo Sana’s personal channels/accounts following their separation from Hololive. I know most people also know Uruha Rushia and Aloe Mano’s current personal channels as well. Most viewers in those new solo channels know they used to be Hololive members, but the common courtesy is to just not talk about it.
In terms of resume/credits following streamers out of the company, that’s a bit more tricky. Luckily, none of the graduated members (so far) have had extensive musical libraries. But I dread the day when someone big like Calli has to eventually graduate and they need to sort out whether or not she can lay I.P. claim to all of the music she’s written under the Calli persona. For example, if a hypothetical post-Hololive Calli attempts to sing “Red”, can COVER copyright strike her on a song that she originally wrote and performed herself? Or there have been a few members who have had formal voice acting gigs in video games or anime credited to their vtuber character as a pseudonym – if they graduate, do we update their IMDB credits to their real name? to their new vtuber/persona? or just leave it be?
This is a wonderful video to pack up my own place to- good luck with the move, excited to keep watching after mine!
i was so looking forward to this update; & the Holocure team did deliver in spades! also again i get to enjoy the overlap of being a Hololive Nerd outside of Hololive circles, to keep the nerding out somewhat concise i will keep it to the characters Dan played (also chat explained a most of it)
– Yuzuki Choco: basically she’s “I’m not Bad, I’m just drawn that way” given VTuber form, despite actually being super chill… until teased; also her birthday is on Feb 14, so Happy Choco Day LOL
– “I AM GOD, OK?” actual Matsuri quote in English; but yeah the whole joke is that Matsuri despite her adorable design she’s one of the biggest degenerates in Erolive… also yes her weapon/mascot is “Ebifurai (fried shrimp) + Raion (Lion in Japanese)” totally didn’t look it up on the Wiki
– so 2 quack trivias about Subaru, she’s actually the origin of the YAGOO meme by missreading Tanigo’s name & adding the stubbies to his face… and yet she’s still YAGOO’s favorite; also this is probably the most her actual lore as a Sports Team Manager used in a fanwork
– speaking of Tanigo & trivia, he’s the one who came up with Aki Rosenthal’s name! also while Mukirose (her Character in ARK: Survival evolved) being a great pun, let’s not miss out Hologra translating it as “Aki Swolenthal”
– so for the most part Ayame’s references are from her appearances in HoloAlternative, except for Nakirium: Ayame is so sweet & takes such long breaks between streams that her viewers need their reserves
so about the “Only benefitial until they leave Fame Boost” it honestly kinda varies from VTuber group:
VShojo for example adopts mostly pre-existing talent & they have full ownership of it, so you do get the boost, but so far nobody has left VShojo
Hololive is a very small sample but so far all 4 members have had pretty good success from their loyal fanbases following, Rushia’s redebut as Nazuna in VShojo was one of the biggest VTuber debuts; also Hololive’s No-Compete clauses are just for VTubing so members like Calli or Noel are still highly active in terms of production & both of them have gained many fans from Holo; so while they can’t say, the term “open Secret” is used for a reason; honestly the main reason we don’t get an “oh yeah i was X in Hololive” is mainly because of why they left (Coco pissed off China, Aloe got doxxed by her manager, Rushia broke NDA), and in the case of Sana is because her current work as an Arknights ilustrator is not really relevant
2:13:13 [Chumbuds sweat profusely]
Ninijsanji depends, but for their latest Groups is clear they have picked previously known talents for their latest EN Groups
for indies it depends, is kinda funny that both AmaLee & Takahata now are getting new audiences unaware of their VA works, & the lower audience of smaller companies makes it hard to gauge
… and then there’s WACTOR that will straight up Doxx you
He doot so hard
The game ends
Man I wanna get the Trombone stamp on Korone’s punches
See how fast it gets
“Something tells me this is not a cutting board character.”
Congrats on getting a spit-take out of me!
One thing I’d like to add is that 0.5 also added mouse controls.
Left-clicking changes between “shoot in the direction you’re moving” and “aiming via. mouse cursor”, and right-click activates your special ability.
Not sure if these have official names somewhere but from what I can tell.
26:34 Three dots = Multi Shot Weapon, Skill (self explanatory), Fist = Melee Weapon, Crosshairs = Defense/Standard Item
28:03 Blast thing = Single Shot Weapon, Double Blue Arrows = Offense/EXP gain Item
28:50 Green Circle = Healing Item
A very good stream i say. Chat with the lore, explanations, and dan with thoughts how the character plays. Looking forward for more!
Hmm. Counter point to your playstyle with Choco. You should go with more healing items not less. Why? Because, like every second healing character in the game, she has a “Turn Heals Into Damage” mechanic. Namely, when she crit heals (which I’m guessing is also based on your crit chance?) she deal up to 400 percent crit damage to everything around her. So more heals = more damage. Though defiantly also grab any crit items you come across.
Almost every character got some sort of buff or nerf. The only one’s that weren’t effectively just number changes though were to Ina, Iris, Ame and to a much lesser extent Suisei. They all feel much better to play now. Also, your the same Dan from Extra Credits! Boy do I feel dumb now. I’ve watched wayyy to many of your video’s without ever making that connection.
54:43 clarification on math for anyone who doesn’t already know it/hasn’t worked it out: In theory by raw DPS, and in practice in most situations, an x% decrease to atk delay beats an x% increase to damage. This is because 1/(1-x) [factor that attack frequency is increased by] > 1 + x [factor that attack damage is increased by] when 0 < x < 1.
Vampire survivors like? I love the term bullet heaven games
Regarding the member that had five Super items in one run: if this is recent and about Marine, that screenshot only had three Super items (which is plenty impressive in its own right), but for some reason somebody misidentified the first two items as Super items. If this was a while ago, then there was a brief window just after Super items were first introduced where a bug made it so that every box gave a Super item. This was very quickly patched.
EDIT: Contrary to its name, only two members of JP Gen 0 were part of the original “wave” of Hololive talents (Tokino Sora and Roboco-san). Everyone else in Gen 0 was either part of a different project Cover was doing and got rolled under the Hololive label (AZKi and Sakura Miko), or a former indie vtuber who got to keep their model when hired by Cover (Hoshimachi Suisei). In other words, Gen 0 is the dumping ground for everyone who was never part of any of the “Generations”.
EDIT2: GAMERS is essentially Gen 2.5, yes. The reason for its name is because Hololive was never intended to be about streaming games, just virtual idol singers. But to ride the wave of game streaming, Cover decided to create GAMERS as a group focused around it. Nowadays the name is an artifact because most of what all the Hololive girls do now is stream games, and the members of GAMERS now do idol singer activities too. It’s worth noting that Shirakami Fubuki is both part of Gen 1 and GAMERS; she was basically inserted as a mentor figure to the other GAMERS members (and Ookami Mio is her friend IRL so they’d work together well too). In a bit of trivia: Oozora Subaru of Gen 2 was vehemently opposed to the idea of streaming games when she started with Hololive, going so far as to declare as such to the staff, but she’s long since caved and is now an avid gamer herself.
Hey I did not know about this channel. Fun. Haato/Hachaama is my fav new character for mechanics
And welcome to canada 🙂
