Do not be lead astray by the mobile gatcha game addicts, FGO is notoriously crap. Even IF you enjoy the general aesthetic the gameplay and plot are just awful. In terms of the design though FGO can be summed up in one word. Flanderization. They take the general Fate character design philosophy and inject it with the worst elements of anime character design played up to 100, and then keep going from there.

Saber faces and gender swaps are also out of control in this series. Lorewise they basically just do whatever they want and make up random bullshit to justify what happens retroactively. They also introduce many elements which make the original servants suck in the grander scheme of things, including revealing that Artoria’s version of Excalibur is a shitty fake weaker version of an excalibur wielded by someone else in the distant past. Absolutely no respect for the original series.

Basically avoid it like the plague is my advice.

Honestly as long as you have the basic concepts of what fate is, and you have an interest in the game, you should really play FGO. You barely need to know anything about fate to enjoy the game. So if you really want to, you should play until the 7th singularity, and if you don’t like the game up to that point you would probably not like the rest of the game.

Yeah I actually started with Fate but what really got me into the series was FGO, and as a result I now end up researching a lot of the legends that come up. Before fate I could probably name like 10 figures at most, now I can name off over a hundred and what they’re generally known for. I also research the ones I like.

Because of Fate, I actually started to learn about real life history and mythology. Never thought in my life, at first it was pretty boring but it quickly grew to me that I find it cool now.
