Translations of lol_rust’s explanations throughout the video:
“Playing through .flow while vaguely explaining things”
0:00
Hello, it’s lol_rust here. I’m going to be playing through and explaining parts of .flow.
Specifically, I’ll be going through the design of the game and my thoughts on it, as well as a brief run through of the systems, puzzles and effects. I’m not going to explain any of the context or backstory for the game.
Odds are, it’ll just turn into a normal playthrough. That said, I’ll be playing until the end of the game.
1:18
I’m quite the type to take influence from a lot of different sources. For example, this concept of accessing the alternate world from the computer rather than the bed probably was probably drawn from Serial Experiments Lain.
1:27
Ooh, the balcony. I remember this area was made quite late into development. You can see that I had improved a little from, say, the spritework of Sabitsuki’s room.
1:39
Of course, you can’t leave through the door. Fun fact: there’s an inaccessible entrance to the debug room right next to here.
1:49
Let’s play some Shinsoku Neko. I actually made a typo here on ‘push stErt’. To be honest, I never really thought to go out of my way and fix it.
2:22
The blue fish always respawn after three seconds, so we should hit the seahorse away in that time to not get overwhelmed.
2:53
You know, in terms of programming, Shinsoku Neko took more effort than .flow itself so in a roundabout way I’ve grown to like it.
3:51
Let’s enter the dream world. These early sections of the game were my first real try at composing and pixel art. Now I feel that they’re a bit rough around the edges.
4:10
Ah, this is the musical world. It’s quite obvious that I had Yume Nikki’s Neon world in mind when designing this place.
4:24
In these sorts of games, including but not limited to Yume Nikki and it’s fangames, as I see it, are designed in one of two ways. One is where you base the game off of a vague, if not spontaneous collection of images, scenes and feelings. The other is where you have a set narrative or wide overview of the entire game and make each scene fit into that plan.
I think Yume Nikki is the prime example of the first category. It feels as if it really has its roots in actual dreams and built off of them. If I were to describe .flow, I would say it fits into the second category. To be honest, I’m not that good at the first method. At the start of development, I did try out that spontaneous style though. I think this world might have been one of those cases.
5:30
Yeah, this hand. It’s totally the Medamaude. I definitely had Yume Nikki in mind.
5:53
If I remember correctly, the maps are set up so moving in a diagonal-down-ish direction usually leads to something.
6:05
Ah, I forgot about this place. It seems that I’ve forgotten a fair amount about the game over time.
The BGM and sound effects make it feel nice to wander around here. Of course, it’s important in a walking sim for walking to feel good in places. Sorry for sounding pretentious.
6:27
Oh man, this isn’t one of the places where walking around is meant to feel nice.
6:31
Right, this maze. Picking the corridors with the most blood leads to the blood-splattered room while picking the ones with the least blood sends you off to a different place.
I don’t understand nothing, but I love that the creator of .Flow is playing his game!
.flow has really stuck with me. Shame I’m unable to understand Japanese >< Will have to read the translations and who knows, maybe it'll get me to learn some Japanese some time Also thank you for making the game
Also, may not be the best place to ask, but I wonder if you have any interest in bring .flow to Steam like Yume Nikki was (To make it easier to play)
i didn’t know until this moment that you had a youtube channel. i love .flow, it’s a fantastic game! thanks for making it
lol-papa. Thank you for everything. More thankful than I could ever truly put into words.
