A great song doesn’t attempt to be anything — it just is.
Although its novelty is reflected by its visuals, the trained ear hears a masterful amalgamation of the tasteful sequencer layers, deeply rooted in a wide variety of styles and genres. Reminiscent of the great, truly deep, deep house tracks from the 90’s, Shaka Bose’s In My Space is a stylistic synthesis of the forward momentum of the late century lounge tradition with the creative bliss of contemporary vaporwave (i.e. Nmesh’s Dream Sequins). When picking apart its unprecedented, tight production one can find the piece also features faint rhythmic hints from a style of hardbass that is partially indebted to the intelligent drum and bass works of LTJ Bukem. Both its storytelling and harmonies appear engimatic on the surface. Yet upon deep reading they intelligently illustrate a meditation on the fundamental limit to the precision by which canonically conjugate variables can be predicted. Most importantly, the song provides a profound, contemplatative insight into the uncertaintes we as humans experience within the space-time continuum. Aside from its own merits, the widespread ramificiations at the intersection of musical history of In My Space can not be underestimated. Ad nauseam, the international rap scene has been held in the grasp of the Atlanta brand of trap. In Bose’s novel opus, the aggressive suburban sprinklers make way for a more intellectual, cosmopolitan sound, culminating in his tightest production yet. A style, at the interface of modern culture, that the Japanese rap scene always embraced as evidenced by the likes of Schadaraparr. As a consequence of the decay of modern hip-hop, it is exactly this back-to-the-roots-approach the genre needs going forward. This song, at its metaphorical crossroads, is a real slap in the face to haters, detesters and trap apologists alike. As proving life remains the prime topic of discourse within this chastised genre, Shaka Bose’s efforts helped it rise phoenix-like from the ashes. Overall, In My Space is an incredibly dope track that will certainly remain in the collective conscience of the avantgarde of the Shibuya-Kei scene. It appeals to the introverts in all of us. An essential if you seek to diversify your aesthetic portfolio.
