i had to pay 80 canadian…pain
It’s just not worth £25/$30, good game just not it’s price
I will have to disagree with most of this.
Watching a stream does not contribute the same feelings as actively exploring. This game is meant to be a short experience, it’s not meant to be a game where pressing A/X gives you the ability to jump, it’s a game that the developers want players to casually be able to enjoy. Personally, the enjoyment I got from watching streams only came AFTER I played the game, knowing where all the secrets were and where the story was headed, and wanting to see someone else also enjoy the game the way I did. You seem to forget WHY streamers exist, and WHY people watch streamers in your critique here. Streamers aren’t meant to be watched in terms of experiencing gameplay. They’re watched because it is fun to watch others experience a game, give their thoughts on it, or overall have a “vibe” (Think in terms of YouTubers like WildCat or streamers like Atrioc, the point of watching them isn’t usually for the game but for their personalities).
Stray is an experience intended to be casual so that most players – if not all – can take a relaxing time enjoying a short but sweet story with a few run sequences and some light puzzling. While the game certainly COULD do harder puzzles, again, that’s not really the intention here. And some would say this means the game would work better as a movie, where again, I would disagree. I think Stray could certainly be an animated short movie and do surprisingly well in that regard, you don’t get the experience the developers intended, which was to explore the world at your pace. It seems like you are trying to relate Stray’s exploration to a game like Skyrim. Skyrim’s exploration is vastly one of the few good things the game does well, caves and ruins add to the experience in ways no other does. There’s just a lot to it and it’s fun to explore Skyrim’s exceptionally vast world. Stray does not have the benefit of a vast world, but a controlled smaller set of environments that each have been crafted for their own beauty. Each section is pretty in its own right, and the player doesn’t need to spend hours exploring every puzzle, nook, and cranny to find hidden items.
Some games work exceptionally well when the actual gameplay takes a backseat, as long as the gameplay that is there has plenty of quality control to reduce bugs and glitches to a minimum. A game like TellTale’s The Walking Dead: Season 1, while glitchy in its own right, is not a gameplay heavy experience. It is very much just an experience meant for the player to tailor to themselves and on their own time. Most of the “gameplay” in The Walking Dead: Season 1 is very small, basically just walking around while maybe pressing a button prompt or two. But no one really plays those games for the gameplay, they’re played to be experienced at a player’s own pace.
To which Stray does well on its own. Yes, it doesn’t have TWD:S1’s choices to choose from, but the experience is tailored specifically for a casual audience. What makes this short critique of yours fall flat – to me – is that you seem to blatantly ignore Stray’s target audience, casual players. It isn’t meant to have harder puzzles, it isn’t really meant to be 8 hours long or more, it’s meant for a player to explore the open areas at their own pace and exploring the linear levels the same way with the exception of run sequences.
Is Stray a PERFECT experience-based game? No. I would also still argue the price tag is a bit much, maybe 20 dollars would be better. That doesn’t mean the game didn’t do what it was designed to do, however, and I think gameplay taking a backseat benefits the overall experience. Challenge was never the intention. Many games do challenge well, and are meant to be challenging (Hitman challenges the player to use stealth and speed to kill targets, Doom Eternal challenges the player to master mechanics meticulously designed to slay demons, Call of Duty… let’s forget that last one) and Stray doesn’t have the design philosophy for adding challenge to it’s gameplay loop. A bonus is actually being able to find things BEFORE getting a side quest for them (or main quest too). I hate games that don’t spawn items in an area right away. All that does is pad out the runtime. Players who do thorough exploration are rewarded with finishing quests before they’re done, and players on reruns can do the same.
I’ll admit the replay value isn’t really there, and there’s a lot to critique, but one playable instance of the game for 4 hours is worth a lot to some people.
TLDR: I believe Luke forgets the point of streamers and content creators who play games, and his view on Stray seems to be that since the game lacks challenge, there’s almost no reason to really buy it (along with a variety of other reasons). There’s definitely a lot more to critique here, but I’ve rambled on too long, so I’ll leave this comment as it is. You could basically make a whole video kinda debunking a lot of what Luke talks about here.
Sidenote: Also I’m usually a fan of researching some of what a game is going to be before getting it. By going in blind, all that’s being affirmed here is to tell people that buying blind while expecting something is okay, which in gaming just isn’t. You should research some of the game you’ll buy BEFORE getting it. If the intention of a game is an experience, but you’re looking for puzzles, why did you buy the game? That seems a little odd to me, at least that’s what I got from how Luke speaks.
Other Sidenote: I do respect Luke a lot, I find his critiques usually well-informed and thought out, I just think this particular one falls flat because the problems with Stray aren’t actually talked about here. Instead, other issues that aren’t really issues are talked about.
Last Sidenote: Yeah I rambled on too long. If you read this… why? Why waste your time? I happen to waste my time because I am certainly an idiot in many regards and I like taking too much time thinking about stuff like this. So um… It’s a very hot year this year, why not go get some ice cream? Get one of those chocolate-covered caramel-centered vanilla ice cream cones from the store, those are delicious.
It’s personally my game of the year
Beautiful experience.
I love cats but I just couldn’t get into this game. It’s just kinda boring to me. The world was cool but it just had nothing to really grab me. I could understand why people liked it but I just didn’t get hooked.
WHAT? are you kidding me???? how are you profiting SOOOOO MUCH out of the game industry and decide to ACTIVLY damage it by advocading to NOT pay the people who make the games??? how discusting! 🤮🤮
it’s fine if it’s not your fav type of game but
it’s not a AAA game, SUPPORT THE FREAKING DEVELOPERS!
Paid $30 for it on release. Gonna pay $40 more for the physical copy. Worth every penny.
there are other free ways to access it if you’re on PC as well. i recommend doing that.
Here we go
At least with video games, you can always go back and replay the game as much as you want. Can’t do that with movie tickets.
I can’t wait until the speedrunning community gets their paws on this game.
I was intrigued by this one but the graphics pulled me back. I am still watching thru the video but leaving a comment for that algorythm 🥳💜
Im usually with you .. but NO .. this is DEF worth your money
theres sooooo MUCH love crafted in every inch of this game
we need to BOOST the indie games and developers that craft amazing NEW & original experiences
if we dont show that love with our wallets we are doing a disservice to the developers on the side of the players
big companys and loot boxes and pay to win developers that we dont value THIS kind of game
if your paying money for BAD games // live games .. pay walled games ..
but not this ? what are we really doing here lol
we NEED to support this game ! PLS !
I’m with everybody else here, playing Stray is completely different from watching it. How many times do we get to play as a cat in a game? That alone should be enough reason to play, but for me personally exploring the world was even more of a highlight, since it’s so interesting and atmospheric. More so, getting a chance to explore it through the perspective of a cat is something I found extremely fun and fulfilling. Climbing a building to get through a window or go through a tight crack in an alley will never get old for me.
And the simplicity of the gameplay never concerned me. After all, cats are masters of movement and jumping is like walking for us, so that simplicity reflects how it really feels like for them I think.
I think the issue with this video is the fact that Luke is stating from the title “Don’t buy this” when he even admitted to enjoying the game for what it was. Maybe this video would’ve been better put as “Thoughts about the game” instead of hey don’t buy this simple yet enjoyable game. And honestly if the title is for hits, it isn’t needed I’m sure Luke’s reach is far enough people would click even if it wasn’t titled A game you don’t need to pay for.
I completely disagree it’s a well made game that has an engaging story that sticks with you well after you have finished the main story. Few games have a story that is succinct and serves its purpose. Who cares about the length look at other games Valhalla (bloated) with a weak story. What is wrong with spending money on a game that doesn’t add in filler missions, but rather has a story that progresses. Great music , an interesting aesthetic and a new perspective. Don’t shit on something that is actually interesting otherwise we will be stuck with the current triple a games that are borderline shite
Before i even begin, let me emphasise that i never right comments, but this is something i feel very strongly about.
In my opinion you should NEVER try to play a game for free if you have the money to buy it. Yes, there is nothing wrong with watching a streamer play a game but doing it for the sole purpose to save money is just mean. I don’t mean to attack you but just as an example you’re promoting something similar to people watching your videos with add block, through a third party website that gives you no credit for the video you spend time and effort creating. I don’t disagree woth your points about the game by the way, i just disagree with withholding reward for the developer for creating a game. Just to finish, here’s another thought: by not paying for a game like this we encourage developers to release the same game for free and ruin it with microtransactions.
Over time, I’ve become more and more disappointed with Luke’s critiques. He mentioned being close to a sentinel and it not noticing it, I once got by one, accidentally meowed and was surprised it noticed me via sound and not via sight. I appreciated that level of detail by BlueTwelve Studios. He also calls the Zurks “sock puppets” as if he forgets what they were called. I’m sure he’s smart enough to call them Zurks and explain it simply for the audience to know the so called “sock puppets” are Zurks. At least sound somewhat educated about the world of the game rather than stumbling on what to call them. I also disagree about not playing the game to experience the gameplay. Hellblade also had simple gameplay, yes, the story is stronger in that game, but Stray I believe is such a relaxing game to wander around the world. I loved climbing around realistically like a cat; the jumps he’s asking I don’t see a cat doing. Lastly, on a somewhat biased note, I am a small fan of Annapurna Interactive’s games, and seeing the amazing work by BlueTwelve studios in their first game makes me willing to pay to support the studio. I also find it disrespectful to mock possible commenters with that mocking voice. Either you find this funny, Luke, or you are actually losing touch. Either on discount or full price, buy this game!
You don’t need a dedicated jump button when you have a dedicated “Meow” button. I
Too many people think BlueTwelve has profit sharing with Annapurna on their first game.
It makes them look good if their game sells but money, they see none of that money if it sells 20mil copies.
