I agree honestly, this game has a steady stream of both great things and lacking things, some scenes are so beautiful and natural while so many places feel so forced and meh. Overall it’s good and I get wrapped in it well but yeah, definitely not a game I’d expect 8 years of development behind lol

My #1 beef with Stray remains that it’s some linear action/adventure platformer where, as Dunkey finally acknowledged, a cat would not care, let alone be willing to fight headcrabs. I immediately assumed it’d be more of an open world survival game where you explore this cyberpunk society, curry favor with NPCs for food and shelter, become more proficient at doing cat things, and I suppose ultimately court another cat to start your NG+, complete with cat customization.

Maybe I asked for too much and I’m hard on this game for not being that, but I still think that would be the best use of what they did make for Stray.

Good points. I think a lot of people are getting hate for writing their own views touching on similar hang ups but especially because they aren’t as good at articulating their thoughts while also pushing out a review day one.

I really appreciate this grounded review. The Dev rely solely on you being a cat with realistic movement and aesthetically pleasing world to carry the entire game, and it just doesn’t work for me. The main plot is to be the hero of the world, but you have very little reason to care about the cat or the world to do so. The world is suppose to be bleak and in despair, but the environment, as pretty as it been, failed to delivery that sense of danger. There are enemies and abandoned places, but the rest looks, in most of the time, poor yet normal neighbourhood like diamond city in fallout 4. The characters aren’t well dressed but you also don’t see all the downside of being in slum with resource shortages. When compared to other indies games, this game is more costly, less entertaining, but received better reviews, solely because it looks good. It’s the equivalent of thinking someone is a good person because they look stunning.
