I like this game but I feel like this game leaves a lot to be desired both from a narrative level and a gameplay one. The choice to make the cat completely realistic and yet give him a robot buddy so there is something close to a protagonist with dialogue defeats the point of playing a realistic cat. Having a cyberpunk future city with robots and some enemies and a “Save the world” plot that tries to raise the stakes is completely incompatible with the fantasy of being a cat. Like, being a cat would be the most unimpressive and uneventful story ever and realistically, this game should have just been set in the modern day with human NPCs instead of this cyberpunk robot gimick stuff and it should have found a way to tell it’s story better without forcing in a talking robot buddy and instead relied on telling story through animal interactions with the cat and by having the cat observe the reality and issues of people living in a city.

Imagine a cat avoiding ongoing gang wars, witnessing married couples fight, children playing on a playground, sneaking into a movie theater, running into much more animals. Small moments like these where the cat never is directly involved in stuff, merely spectating or avoiding things is more closer to how a cat lives their life anyways. If anything, the whole idea of a cat witnessing humanity’s sad, happy, violent and most personal experiences from afar would be a great way to justify using a cat with no personality to tell a story about people that do and about what it’s like to exist and be aware of others. I think that is what Stray kinda wanted but couldn’t achieve because it was scared people would blow it off without some cyberpunk robot gimicks and a save the world plot and a robot protagonist with dialogue. I also think the game needed a slightly bigger budget and more time to polish it’s gameplay and graphics and simply put, 5 hours is extremely short even for a game that is only $30. Ideally, the game should be at least 9 hours at minimum. Stray could have been so much more than a gimick game.
