This is kind of what I’d been wondering about Stray: Is it good? Or is it just getting a lot of attention because you play as a cat and that in itself is a novelty? It seems more like the latter, though it’s a fully functioning game–all of it could have been pulled off more elegantly. I guess the cat doesn’t quite stick the landing.

I feel like not enough people are talking about the actual deeper backstory behind the game’s world. Sure, it’s not mind blowing in how unique it is or anything but I still felt instantly very intrigued and drawn into learning more about the mysteries the world presents, like where the companions all came from, how they evolved on their own, why the city was built and where the humans all went. But also, cat.

Everything stops making sense after meeting B-12. The game starts and you get to play as a cat. But then suddenly, this little robot shows up and starts talking to you as if you aren’t a cat and everything you do from that point on is just follow directions.

I also don’t feel like they did enough to make this cat unique. There are a bunch of cats out there with unique quirks and behaviors, and this cat only has the most common behaviors.

Controlling as a cat is unique but for me, what trumps everything was the experience brought upon by the atmosphere and soundtrack. I don’t mind the game being short as long as it’s a memorable experience, hunting down the memories was illuminating. This is still an indie game by a small team, so I could forgive it being rough around the edges. Just like little nightmares 1 and 2, there isn’t anything like it. I was a fan of the original Nier too before Automata made it a thing. It was low budget and wasn’t the greatest game but it was a unique experience and had a touching story and moving soundtrack. Is stray perfect, no. But for me it wasn’t overhyped and actually surpassed my expectation. Considering how detailed the environment and its residents are I thought it was quite an impressive feat.
