i havent read the article but maybe the writer was pertaining to the fact the almost—if not all— cyberpunk-inspired genre are almost always falls into orientalism. i mean the writer isn’t wrong. look at the history of cyberpunk inspired games or movies in the west and you’d definitely see that.

i dont share the critics opinion, but i also interpret it correctly unlike you. no one asked to cancel the game and no one called it racist, they criticize its “orientalism”, which is the strong focus on asian culture to appear different from common culture in the west. in other words; lets make it look like japanese slums to distinguish it from “our normality” and make it appear foreign and futuristic – as most or all cyberpunk does. its no coincidence that the matrix code design is based on a japanese cookbook text. its a common stereotype.
i dont think thats a huge problem because its not done in a derogatory way, but its a matter of opinion and having a different one is valid.

likewise with GoT, you misinterpret the critique and ridicule it, instead of taking it as is; a valid opinion. its using stereotypes, doesnt matter if positive or not. im pretty sure lots of japanese people love the game – but so do americans when depicted as world saving heros like in independence day not caring about the rest of the planet or opposing states. what the journalists dont understand is, that fiction does not shape reality, but copies it and changing it wont work to change reality. however, blowing ones opinion out of proportion and scandalising it is no refutation of arguments and doesnt help, despite getting lots of views from “anti woke” rebels.
