Tsushima was the stepping stone to the brutal colonization of Korea by Japan. Samurai were violent tax collectors. Of course the Tsushima government would embrace a romanticized western depiction to distract from its past. Most Japanese people saw ghost of Tsushima as a cute attempt rather than an actual depiction of history. Kowloon walled city was a dangerous opium den, the British addicted millions of Chinese in the prior century. The British didn’t want to deal with the city so they demolished it, displacing tens of thousands. This is not a cute aesthetic for a cat game, this is painful history that the game doesn’t address. The game also randomly uses rice paddy hats, typically associated with racist depictions of East Asians.
