This is another shameless attempt of me taking advantage of the drought where I recommend yatz to play Va-11 Hall-A
Welp, guess we know that he is emotionally dead. This is where we part ways. Critics are only useful when they entertain and inform. You no longer do either.
Stray isn’t really a game where you take the role of the hero. More like, you’re role-playing the hero’s mount.
Like if a Witcher game started out controlling one of the Roach iterations, you meet Geralt, and he tells you what city to ride to next, then watch as he talks to guards, townspeople, kings, then you carry him to the next battle, and so on.
Or if a Shadow of the Colossus spin-off was you controlling Agro, and you ride to the next Colossus together, just to watch him hop off and start climbing it, stabbing it, falling off and jumping on you again, and on and on.
I don’t think the cat is the hero of the overarching story, when the drone does all the translating, remembering of his past, and eventually dying for a cause. Stray is a mount-simulator.
Spot on!
considering that the cat can apparently read, I don’t think we’re dealing with a bog standard 1:1 modern day cat
Here’s the twist no one understood: You actually don’t play the cat but the little B12 drone and B12 just uses the cat as a convienent ride.
You know, if you’re familiar with cat body language, it does seem like some of the emotional moments do come across to the adorable main character. At the end, after the drones self sacrifice bit, when the cat leaves the underground he turns back around to deliver a long blink to the camera, and by extension the entire underground city and his dead drone friend. The long blink in cat language is basically an admission of total love and trust, so it comes off as a genuinely bittersweet moment. The reason why people characterize cats as being aloof and uncaring is because their aloofness is how they show affection as a predator species. There is no greater sign of trust to them than being able to ignore your existence entirely, because they can only do that if they’re certain you won’t hurt them. It’s strange by human standards, but that’s how cat behave amongst themselves too.
I can’t help but think that reason why these robots is robots seen to talk to this cat like it’s another person or something that would naturally understand them is almost trying to show the disconnect between These robots and how long it’s been since they’ve seen something other than another bot. you know what I mean. Like the innobility to grasp the concept of something else being alive or or moving being something that can’t understand or even care about them. I haven’t played the game myself but that’s where my mind goes with the context provided by the video
“Forfeit the right to call you a d!ck”? But we’re cat, ya d!ck

… can haz scritches?
For a cat game it doesn’t do a lot of cat things. It has basic gameplay and a very simple story. Its strength really hangs on its environment and novelty of controlling a cat.
I watched all the way to the end.
Dick.
Can I watch the vid of yahtzee asking for a cig after wisdom teeth surgery instead of watching this games playthrough? It be enjoyed more.🤣
Finally another cat game. It’s been since 1983 that we got “Alley Cat”
Cats hate belly rubs. Did you even do any research for this?
Missed opportunity for a Dog’s life name drop, smh.
I mean you do get something for returning all the music sheets. You get a “music badge.” Iirc there are like 8 badges in total which you get in mostly similar ways. They get pinned onto your little backpack thing.
If you get all the recovered memories for the robot he also like transforms your backpack into an iridescent colour (although this was extremely unrewarding because if nothing else you get the last memory at the very end of the game).
Although it’s not really as much about the end reward for the badges/memories, but journey/experiences that lead you to it.
I feel that the game is heavily implying that the cat has a much higher level of sentience/cognition than your average housecat that we know today. A long-ass time has passed since the humans died out, to the point where the cleaning bacteria has evolved into monsters, the robots have evolved a human-like culture. I think that cats in this world are also a lot smarter. The protagonist cat seems to be able to understand what the robots are saying.
LOL no mercy, just like a cat.
Ha I still have the right to call you a dick! Dick!
Cats are wheelchairs
