I get the feeling Yahtzee is not a cat person lol. Dedicated meow button, cute animations, game of the year
Yeah, you’re not a cat person, aren’t you Yahtzee?
Honestly the story could work with 1 tweak. Make it the joke that everybody places all this hope and shit into a random cat. Like make the whole premise that this cat is some grand savior or some shit but the cat isnt aware and doesnt care
Perfect summary, I’m trying to 100% it.
Yahtzee you whipper snapper… there was a game called Alley Cat…
Yup, that’s the final review of Stray I had to see, now I can forget about this game until I get reminded of its existence when it’s part of Humble Bundle Pet-bundle 2024 or other Fanatical bundle
i cant believe you spoiled stray cat game for me you di- dammit
From Steam page of the game:
ALL REVIEWS: Overwhelmingly Positive (57,569)
In 2 weeks since the game’s launch.
Gotta hand it to the devs – they knew what they were doing. No matter how short, boring, bad and/or pointless the game itself is, you can and will make *bank* on it solely on account of it being centered around a cat. The cat-worshipping culture of the internet was just *bound* to make it happen, and it did.
And well – all the power and congratulations to the devs for their success, even though it’s most definitely not a game for me.
The game is overrated as fuck. Yes cats are cute, but you can’t make a whole game just around the AND call it game of the year. There needs to be actual game to qualify and this 4 hour adventure barely registers as such.
Here I was thinking someone had finally created an RPG game based on the Heroes book series by Erin Hunter. You know the one about all the different cats and cat gangs. That would have been a better option!
LOL! So funny with the kitty and Yahtzee attacking other kitties… and the buttons running gag! XD Oh, and the “verby-werby” thing! XD
I pre-ordered this game but ended up refunding it. It pretty much is a walking sim that doesn’t really dedicate itself to the central premise, that is, play as a cat.
Like you said, the core loop doesn’t see you as a cat. You act like a regular protagonist. I started losing the immersion when arrows started guiding me at the start. And I found my self thinking over and over “why am I doing this? I’m a cat!”
Once you get over being a cat, the rest of the game is pretty mediocre.
A cat sleeping next to you is a sign of trust an affection. It is not a dog it’s a fucking cat, it communicates differently.
4:28 You want to know what a hopeless cat person I am? I heard that and my first thought was “Nah, cats don’t actually like belly rubs”
Yeah – all the reviews of this game who aren’t indoctrinated “cat people” seem to be coalescing around the opinion “The cat mocap/model/physics are astounding but there’s not much game here is there? And why are we a cat?” I feel like the realistic cat gimmick would have worked better if the game was set in the **real world** and the gameplay is trying to survive as a stray cat in a big city? i.e. 1) Get food 2) sleep to regenerate stamina 3) Make cat babies
Okami and A Dog’s Life, never forget the game with the poop button!
Yeah, the game suffered from ‘we have lot of neat ideas and no idea of which one to focus on so we lose track of our core theme eventually by half-doing all of them’ syndrome. Someone who gets paid can come up with a better term for that, but I see it a lot in creative work.
Between this and the Dunkview, it seems pretty clear that what we have is a short, shallow, relatively unimpressive experience, where all it can offer (and all the hype) is “be a cat!”. If that idea really excites you and you don’t need any additional depth, great, however, for most people this game sounds pretty disappointing once you get over “i’m a cat” in the first 30 minutes.
Tokyo Jungle or GTFO
Yatzee should be old enough to remember the old alley cats game on dos
