I enjoyed the change in perspective. I found myself looking through environments more thoroughly like I do when I play VR games. No real point to it, but it feels more grateful than ignoring it going through nth house in xth rpg.

I don’t expect Stray to be universally loved, but I’ve been disappointed by the “not for real gamers” sentiment from some folks. I loved it, I enjoy TLOU, I hate Elden Ring, each has to be played entirely differently to be appreciated. Sure, I could say that if a person doesn’t like the jump-here button, you can turn it off, but, really, if you think it’s a waste of time to meow at the nodding camera or slip through legs to get into a room or nap listening to music, if you think someone could have fully played it if they did it in a couple of hours, move on to the next entertainment.

There’s a brilliance woven throughout Stray and a meta discourse in it that I think _can_ be acknowledged whether or not someone “gets” the gameplay, but that sort of gameplay isn’t everyone’s cup. I’ve spent more money and had a shorter experience sitting in a lump watching some of the less-than-good Marvel movies. And I’m a dog person (preferably giant super-hairy dogs—you know, real dogs (JOKING)), so go figure.

But even Yahtzee admits that it was on brand for what a cat would do, and if the robots were imitating human behaviour without understanding why, then humans weird obsession with cats would have rubbed off on them too.

I appreciate the effort the animators made to ensure that the cats butthole is always obscured by the tail, even if it does make the tail look broken. At least somebody learned a lesson from “Cats” the movie.

I feel like if they’d gone for more of a “Untitled Goose Game but with realistic graphics and you play as a cat” type deal rather than “Half-Life 2 mod where Gordon Freeman is replaced with a cat and no-one notices” type serious story, it would have felt more tonally consistent and led to a less confusing experience.
