Lorewise one of Stray’s major faults is how invested each character is in the protagonist when they’re just a cat who is presumably just wandering around doing its own thing. It’s even referenced in the beginning when everyone thinks you’re a horrible monster because they haven’t seen a cat before and then they figure out you’re not going to eat them, so just treat you normally. However from this point on it keeps placing value on the cat as a character, when in reality the cat just carries the drone around and they should be celebrating the drone (and kinda confused that a cat is following it).
When I saw the trailers, I thought Stray was just going to be a game where you wander around as a cat and that’s the main gameplay – you’re a cat. While I did appreciate the plot moving forward, it definitely feels like your role could’ve just as easily been fit as a tiny robot alongside the tiny drone rather than a cat and a tiny drone.
Contextual with cats? Can one have context with cats? 😜 the fact the jumping is not consistent with the cat sounds like a perfect cat simulator.
Having an absurd protagonist isn’t really all that far afield. Just a couple years ago, a cartoon protagonist turned himself into a pickle just to rub everyone else’s face in it and the Internet lost their collective minds.
I figured any semblance of reality was broken when the cat started inserting whole-ass car batteries into sockets and inputting four number codes into keypads.
Either this cat is bumbling his way through these puzzles like a feline Mr Magoo or it’s about as smart as those genius 140 iq babies from Brazil.
I feel like the hype for this game mostly comes from the same kind of people who have “quirky” DnD campaigns on Discord.
NOT a fan of you using an ableist slur several times in this review. please amend.
I would have loved it if the game ended with the cat licking its own asshole, but I guess you can’t have it all.
I want to throw Rain World into the mix for best cat games. Post-apocalyptic world where your cute sentient (slug)cat sits in the middle of the food chain and has to make an epic spiritual journey (for over 4 hours) to find its family while avoiding getting chowed on by a bunch of lizards, birds, and weird spider things.
I was seriously about to mention Blinx and then he shut me down. Fantastic. XD
this game was designed for toxoplasmosis victims
i think the cats in this game have evolved over the years to have near human like intelligence…but i do like yhatzees interpretation of the cat having no idea what all just happened lol
Well to be fair you don’t really need opposable thumbs when your robot drone companion can digitize any item that you find and store it in your futuristic backpack. And then can also take those digital items and recompile them into physical items when needed. Everything the cat can’t do the robot does instead. That’s why it’s there.
I would be questioning more how the cat understands the complexity of puzzle solving. Before you even get the robot companion you have to plug a bunch of things into another thing and what cat would know to do that?
1. You do get pins, on your backpack, by completing stuff. But your opinion just makes Stray even more epic. It’s better than Elden Ring!
Gato Roboto was a metroidvania starring a cat. He was in like a little power armor suit, but you could get in and out of it.
Frankly I expected this to just be a nicely themed walking simulator. The fact that there is more I would call a positive.
Guess he never played Bugsy.
Stray is a game for cat people, where a large part of the enjoyment comes from the novelty of seeing realistic cat behavior and animation in a video game.
Catboy Yahtzee
There was that ps2 dog or dogs life game from the 2000s
HE MENTIONED BLINX! LET’S GOOOO! Loved that game as a kid and played it a few years ago. Wish they made a 1 for 1 remake of it in a newer engine with slightly better graphics for kids today. EY YAPPAH!
