I just spent my first summer on my own after teaching this last year and the instantaneous come-down from nurturing community member to isolated sad-sack made me come to the same conclusions as Honneth. The Maslow hierarchy is a codified disaster, I think it’s one of the prisms through which ignorance and suffering is justified to continue.

If this is the narrative the game is trying to get across it seems like a bunch of “woke” bullshit. Sure our ancestors spent millions of years in smaller groups (which fought) and wider societies are a more recent innovation. It’s no wonder then that things are more sanctioned the larger a community becomes. Depending where one goes they can either be pigeon-holed into an identity that fits the story that most people in an area share or get to reinvent themselves towards who they would want to be. What about poor social mechanics that are fostered in an echo chamber? What if you’re in an area where you constantly feel/think you’re being misrecognized? From what’s covered here this game seems like a strawman against capitalism in opposition to something maybe like The Office. Helen appears healthier than before which is nice to see; those philosophers though, oof. There’s a lot I disagree with in this video. A problem many stories face is that in peddling their narrative they perceive some things as true and others as false and embellish things accordingly. I think we’ve got kind of a good balance available now with the pseudo-parasocial relationships. While one my know they’re separate from the people who are in the media they observe, they can maybe get some exposure to things they want and may otherwise lack. What would it take for you to do a video on Hogswatch?

Love that you mentioned Thomas Nagel to do a brief aside about our disconnect to other organisms despite our anthropomorphic tendencies to desire to know them!! I hate how we’ve adopted “animals” as a frame of reference to compare “what defines humanity” bc it is innately reductive to the vast array of consciousness available in the animal kingdom that is forever skewed through a decidedly human lens that views it!! Fuck Plato for saying animals are automata. *gasps for air after saying all of that in one frenzied, hyperfixated breath*

My only complaint is that you only viewed it as capitalism. It can be seen as pre capitalism, capitalism, socialism, and supposed utopia of communism, which requires a benevolent person in power to give up power in its entirety to lead into a utopia (A garden of Eden as seen by the expanse of flora on completion.)

Socialism leads to the individual being a replaceable robot, controlled by a government, as seen through the lens of history and its failures, you need to think the same way, believe the same way, or you are replaced.
