I just want to further my point because I didn’t mention this in the video but I’m sure some of you will think a comparison to GOATS from overwatch is an extreme one. Whilst I agree, for now, I don’t think it’s unreasonable that if the Initiator class stayed as dominant by the time we have 8-10 initiators in the game that by that point it is a possibility that a lot of maps might have 3 initiators on them as meta, by which point most people probably would say it is a problem. So whilst for now it’s fine, if this continues on this trajectory I think then we might need to start to worry!
Imo it will only become a problem if one role gets forgotten entirely, i. e. the Goats in ow they don’t use dps heroes, It won’t be a problem in valorant until every map turns into a no duelist comp then that’s a problem.

It’s interesting because even on a conceptual level, initiators seem the most important to me. So I can’t imagine a way to nerf them. As long as they fit the role of “initiator” they will be some of the most important agents

Goats may have been oppressive and boring to watch but it was also really fun to play and is considered the peak of overwatch for a lot of players. I hope riot don’t ruin valorant to fix the issue like blizzard did to overwatch
Tbh I think it’s mostly just that initiator class is very broad. Most double initiator comps will run recon+flashes. For example, Breach+fade or kayo+sova. If you split initiators as recon and flashes you’ll see that it’s uncommon to run two of the same type and both types are fairly vital on basically all maps. That’s my thoughts anyway
i think nerfing chamber might help with reducing the prevalence of initiators because initiators are the best agents at forcing chamber off of early angles, which given chamber’s power level is a must-do every round.
It makes sense that initiators are strong in pro play as in pro play as information is very important at the highest level so sova or fade are better in pro play than in ranked even though they are also good in ranked. The point of using the utility throughout the round also is more important in pro play with it recharging, as people generally just run it down in ranked and the timer doesn’t come into play that often. The timer not running out that much might just be cause I’m low rank though lol. Flash agents are also better in pro play as you are less likely to be flashed by a teammate since comms are better

Im also not sure if its a problem but info and flashes are just the best util in the game. In CSGO, you have your entry and AWPer and all then other roles kinda fill the gaps for them, and its kinda how val is set up too. We need supportive agents and initiators are just more important (IN MOST cases) than controllers. I think smokes inherently are more valuable to the team but there are very few maps/situations that you need 2 things from a controller (post plant lineups, dome smokes, walls) but every map you need drones and flashes just as much as “a” smoke
honestly, more of the E abilities should have their own unique recharge condition like duelist’s on kill effects. Maybe initiators should get E abilities back on assist’s, don’t know if that’s more or less powerful.
imo the fundamental problem with initiators is that they are design with the most overlap among all roles. Apart from sentinels on defense, most initiators have info gathering abilities that make them the most reliable agents for info gathering even on attack rounds that sentinels don’t have. It doesn’t help that they also have individual and team play making utility as well. Why play 2 duelists when you can have 2 initiators that can gather info and have more flexibility in execs and retakes than them or why play 2 smokes when 2 initiators can bypass any smokes with info gathering while having their solo controller manage the smokes role decently. It seems that initiators with non-info gathering util like Breach has been put on ice considering all initiators that came after Breach and Sova have some info gathering to them and that Breach has always remained in the lower half of the pick rates every act.

I honestly think this isn’t a huge issue. It feels like an inevitability that team based agents will always be preferred in a competitive environment over selfish agents like duelists (and at times Sentinels).
I think this issue will get better before it gets worse too. A good reason why double controller/sentinel isn’t used is because the agents within each role are way more similar than initiators. The only real viable pairings without role overlap in each role are Sage/Viper + the others, whereas there’s a lot more potential pairings with initiators.
We saw hints of Omen + Viper from FPX on Haven vs DRX and they honestly should’ve won that map convincingly. Even currently, it’s not like picking something other than double initiator is a guaranteed loss. Great vid as always though
