Initiators are indeed quite strong and versatile, while sentinels are a bit lacking. I think the problem is that you can stack 2,3 initiators and get lots of value. You aren’t restricted to a particular playstyle like double controller comp and the abilities don’t overlap with each other much. Sova and fade works better than omen and brim, even though they’re in the same subclass of their class.

I so wish that this was a real problem us in the Mumbai server faced. Its still 2-3 duelists at the minimum meta (and no I don’t count chamber as a primary sentinel). So I always always end up with comps which include 2-3 duelists+chamber. As a controller main it sucks and the game has become so sooooo boring.

As someone pointed out here in the comments, Initiators are essential to pro-play, as long as they fullfill the role they will be stronger.
Only agents picks and bans can counter the double initiator meta in most maps

I think is woth to point out that he is talking about pro level. On rank is acutally unusual to have two initiators, and the lack of coordination makes them not even look that strong

Information is king.

Coming from years of playing counterstrike, the most important component of a round on a high/pro level wasn’t frags, smokes or flashes. It was information gathering.

In any 5v5 tac shooter at a high level where all the players in the server have peaked the aim/gamesense ceiling, information gathering will always be the central pillar in the fundamentals of that game.

Considering that the information abilities in valorant are much more powerful, diverse and easy to use (vs using a single flash in CS to bait out where the AWPER is playing); I think Initiators will forever be the primary backbone of any team comp, regardless of the introduction of new maps or agents in different categories.

i think their ability to get information while having other uses is what makes them strong like kayo can get info and silence and delay push and take 1v1 and long flash for teammate, how do i say it, they have a diverse kit suited for multiple situations on top of their insane intel gathering capability also i think the game need initiators like breach where he doesnt have any intel ability, and straight up make gunfights easier for teammates as his main gimmick

Initiators are jack of all trades type characters. They can control information and initiate and take duels usually. IMO initiators being picked more is not a problem as long as they aren’t replacing other roles entirely. The core question that needs to be asked is “is this style fun?”. Like, would the game be more fun with less initiator utility? In another analogy, would the game be fun if duelists were the dominant class and replaced everything else? Well, it would be a lot more fast paced and aim duel focused, but imo it would be less fun, but some people would probably like that.

So, guess initiators force a meta where we use rollout utility to take space as soon as the round starts. Take fracture a main control for instance. The dominant strategy is just to force a main control and THEN work from there. Is that fun? What would the game look like if teams didn’t have enough utility to take control without dry peeking. Would it get too slow? More lurky?

I feel like site rushes are way better in a game like CS:GO because teams have less utility for controlling space so it’s viable to just deathball rush a site and get trades. Easier takes, easier retakes. IMO both styles of game are very fun. I like the cat and mouse type early round dynamics and fakes in Valorant just as much as I like the organized but flowing site rushes of CS.

Maybe just split up the initiator role to “initiators” and “info gatherers”. Like, the initiators atm is literally anything between stunning and flashing all of site to healing your entire team and having info abilities. Or just change the role name from “initiator” to “support” cause theyre literally all support agents, breach is like the only initiating initiator…

If you ignore the roles the game gives typically a balanced comp runs something like entry, wallhack, flash, smoke, trap/anchor, and the agents that take up the flash category are Phoenix, Reyna, Yoru, Skye, Kayo and Breach, and the initiators are just categorically better. In 2021 we saw a lot of phoenix and reyna because they were straight up better than the initiators, so the only initiator we saw would be the Sova in the wallhack class

I think that initiators will also always be important because at the highest levels of the game information can mean the difference between winning and losing rounds and initiators are information gatherers

I think double initiator is is fine. Something has to have a double up and the recon vs flash subtypes are the most distinct subtypes inside a main role. If triple initiator become super meta I think that would be a problem though since it is crowding out other main roles.

In a game like Valorant where a split second window of fight almost always guarantees a kill, having the ability to foresee or know where the opponents are is of utmost importance. So agents whose primary role is literally gathering info is bound to be the better class
