Laz so good aimming

Japan as a nation should by all metrics be a powerhouse in esports…. It’s sad seeing Japan’s performance in events like this, and the Winter Major performance by Team Detonator in Rocket League where they were only able to win 1 game in a best of 5, and lost every other game they played the other 2 BO5’s. Japan just needs a lot more interest in esports in general and a massive shift in cultural views about gaming before they will be able to take their place as a contender in esports. Just look at their fighting game dominance in the past to see what they are capable of in gaming. PC gaming has only recently started to gain popularity here and the country is very far behind in esports. I am closing my esports cafe located in Machida, Tokyo after 2 years of pouring my heart and soul into it because there’s almost no interest in playing in a LAN environment among Japanese gamers. The majority of the customers we had were already employed, or university students whose parents didn’t know they were out playing games instead of studying. We had some high school kids occasionally, but they always lamented that they can’t come more often because their parents want them to study. The kids in Japan want to play, but studies come first with parents.
The number of gamers is increasing dramatically here, but most adults just want to play online in their spare time casually or phone games while they are commuting to work, putting most of their time into their work, and parents are still extremely prejudiced against video games, rarely allowing their children to put gaming time over study. Most parents view video games as a complete waste of time…
Hence, the number of up and coming players is very small here compared to other countries. I don’t see that changing in Japan any time soon. I was hopeful that the Intel World Open which was supposed to coincide with the Japanese 2020 Olympics was going to dramatically change people’s viewpoints here…. which is why I opened my esports cafe right around that same time…. but my cafe failed, along with many other cafe’s which are mostly empty which initially I thought it was perhaps because of covid. Now I believe esports in Japan is very slowly gaining interest and acceptance because of parents and is probably going to remain far behind the rest of the world for the next 20-30 years unless something huge changes parent’s minds. I dunno…. I hope to keep changing minds here and show more parents that even if your kid can’t become a pro player, there’s lots of room in the industry for other kinds of work and there is a future in it and that gaming can prepare kids for real life by teaching them all kinds of useful skills. But there aren’t many voices like mine in Japan, and I’m not Japanese. I am Canadian.
