Personally, I like this game, but I agree that there’s too much focus on the robot inhabited post-apocolyptic world and not enough about being a cat. I expected a section where you chase after prey or get distracted by a laser pointer. I don’t like the limitation of movement either. Why is every jump a button prompt? Why isn’t there a mechanic where you have to orient your body to survive a large fall with little impact? The only challenge this game has is surviving zurks and sentries.

This is actually my biggest problem with Stray. They marketed it as being The Cat Game Where You Play As Cat, but like, doing cat things isn’t incentivized, doing *human* things is incentivized. And the longer it goes on, the more it starts to feel like it being a cat is just a distracting and unnecessary detail.
My thoughts exactly Yahtz. It seems like a fine fun little experience but there’s just a lot of little things that make you go “wait a minute” if you think about them for a second. Not to mention the contextual button jumps.
Blinx the time sweeper? I havnt heard that name in years
I am American what the fuck is HP Sauce?
Stray is actually just about a cat wanting to go outside.
I feel there’s a strong message of entropy & communication that the cat protagonist really emphasizes & enables. But I suppose if the plot doesn’t interest you, it’s just very random
Youre writing is amazing.
One small correction to the video: if you find all of the music sheets, you get a badge added to your little backpack. You would never know it was there if you weren’t looking for it!
I loved this game, and everything Yahtzee said about it is true. It doesn’t change my opinion of the game one bit, and the video was freakin’ hilarious. Win-win!
Every gamer
every gamer
every gamer
wants to be a cat
[meow]
I like how simple this game is, collecting things for a character just cuz you can and learning to stretch out and take a moment to just snooze and zone out to ambience
it’s more art then a “game” experimenting with the medium of how to tell a story in a video game. I was expecting an open world free form adventure game through a cyberpunk city
But honestly I’m glad I didn’t get that, too many open world games are out there now and they’re all getting very tiresom
also the jump prompt makes sense given the size of the dev team and the limitation helps the devs give more polish to everything
if I could jump freely you sure as hell bet there’d be A LOT more bugs, glitches, falling through the world, or just wonky animations trying to make the smooth cat movements
Stray is a good game because it’s not trying to be a great game, it’s just a nice experience and refreshing change in pace from everything else we’ve been getting shovel at us from video games these last few years. Appreciating the simple joy of “meow button” not “min/max my meta stats to sweat as hard as I can”
Um, I see cat meow, I buy game! It’s epic that cat model does cat animations. Game? What?
I look forward to more games featuring cats or at least anthropomorphic cats so we can see the return of Catzee
Yeah I’d be upset if I got it and killed it in 4 hours
I had a similar reaction to the robots speaking to the cat. Like, the thing can’t understand you. It’s a cat. I had no idea what the developers wanted me to think. Is it supposed to be taken seriously? In that case there’s tons inconsistencies and holes everywhere. Am I just supposed to turn off my brain and smile because cute kitty cat? The game’s not really good for that either. I had to tell myself that the cat was just extremely lucky and actually had no idea what it was doing the whole game. It was pulling levers and starting a robot revolution out of pure luck and just being a general menace to society. It just happened to be leading them the right way out of the city. No planning on the cat’s part. Just luck. Once I thought about it like that the game became kinda funny.
Didn’t enjoy you saying spaz. It’s like the last 40 or so years hadn’t happened. I usually have really enjoyed your work.
The weird thing is that there was a game that had a similar plot years ago. Ever hear of the game, “The End”? In that game, you play a fox going through a cyberpunkish world full of robots. Try it out and see for yourself.
