i mean, this is funny and all, but the cat is obviously intelligent, like, it’s species has had hundreds of years of evolution by this point
Oh wow, a vacuous trend/gimmick game about a cat is pretty shit and vacuous. Who could have seen that coming…
I have that exact dollar store cat bowl…
Sorry, just had to divert to the powerwash simulator livestream.
I thought that I would like the game, but maaan, I didn’t. Well, washing the van in the tutorial was fun.
“Blinx The Time Sweeper” loyalists arise. All 13 of you.
I would play a game where you play as a roomba, preferably with googly eyes attached.
I actually looked up cat behaviors when I was a kid and cats rubbing and meowing and resting near a “corpse” is relevant. Cats are indeed harder to get loyalty from but once you do it’s heartbreaking to see it, case in point the ending where it’s eluded many hrs pass. At the end of the day a cat game for animal people who aren’t trying to shag it is a good game to me
For full immersion play the game in a language you don’t understand.
Cat’s…. Ungrateful bastards
The comment about “things you only do for their own sake”, as if that were a bad thing, really captures the essence of why this game might be for some people but not for others. If you’re a jaded seen-it-all capital-G Gamer who craves extrinsic rewards and cares about mechanics, then it won’t be as much fun as for people who will just enjoy pottering about the environment, soaking in the atmosphere and doing cat-things, without the need to get a level-up as pay off. The buzz around the game shows that there are many more of the latter people out there than some people think. I’m not even much of a cat person, yet I still found the moments where you curl up to sleep and the camera slowly zooms out to be some of the most charming and rewarding moments I’ve experienced in games.
Now I want to see a cyberpunk dystopia version of Homeward Bound, I feel like that would be the greatest movie of our time…
Is Yahtzee’s animosity towards this game entirely because he is chuffed that Dabarella is the leader of the party?
I think people really put too much expectations on this game. It’s a short run game in a cool world while you get to play as a cat and meow at everything. What more do we really need?
Alas, I fear there IS a game that came first for those longing to play as a cat. Look up the Catlateral Damage trailer. And then suffer.
So it all boils down to, it’s a cat, and that makes it weird…? The cat does have reactions, but it’s not as if we can have it sit around and give speeches and ruminate on its feelings when something emotional happens. That would draw you out of the story the game is trying to tell even more. To rant a bit on this…
When B12 sacrifices himself the cat does react emotionally, and sure, it’s not a human reaction, but that was the point, wasn’t it? This just sounds like a case of Yahtzee having trouble empathizing with the cat. As much as we want to say that stray doesn’t anthropomorphize its cat, and there’s a good case to be made there, the player is supposed to be imagining themselves as the cat trying to get back to their family. Anthropomorphizing the cat is kind of the premise of the game, if understanding what’s going on in any sense and having attachments/goals qualifies as anthropomorphism. If you can play it, then presumably you an accept the premise, so why would the robots who gained sentience and have no idea what you(the cat) are, or even what to call you, have any reason not to accept that you can pick up the cables they asked for? Hell, the game implies it’s been a huge amount of time since the humans died out, so what if cats did gain human-like sentience since then? Why not?
If anything could have been improved, it would be an expanded upper area for the game rather than the brief time you spend in the upper level and more impact from the interactions with the setting.
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
My one issue with the game is the ending. All of the arcs developed don’t pay off. They set up Momo as being a stray being separated from its pack of 4. All I needed were two still images of Momo reuniting with the outsiders and the cat pack being back together.
The main thing I learned from this review is that Yahtzee is not a cat person.
Gatze!
I like how Yahtzee adds cat ears to his already cat ear-shaped fedora hat.
Would have been really cool if they created this whole cyberpunk oppressive regime scenario and then just used it as nothing but a backdrop for the whole quest just being the cat trying to find it’s family or some tuna or something
