There was, of course, Alley Cat, way back in the days of CGA graphics. You played a cat whose sole goal was to intrude on strangers houses and hook up with a female cat. Probably as realistic a “cat” game as we will ever need.
Ummm Yahtzee have you ever tried to give a cat a belly rub?
Nice job drawing your Yahtzee sprite curled up like a cat. 😄
Nooooo! You can’t critique on the kitty gamerino!
So, here’s my take. You’re not playing as a cat.
You’re playing as something cat shaped, with human intelligence, having evolved over the course of many, many years. Like, the game may be up to 4.5-7 million years in the future. A robot mentions it’s been some 10 digit long number since the humans left. The Zurks are evolved from single celled organisms.
You’re not a cat. You’re something that evolved from a cat.
I wonder how Yahtzee’s review would have differed if the game was just a cat walking simulator. I mean except for a few puzzles and stealth sections it basically was.
I sense yahtzee isn’t a cat person
Sounds like they captured what playing as a cat would be like pretty well to me? Everyone’s unreasonably obsessed with you, you go along for fun, and in the end just wander on wondering what the heck that was all about.
Well, there is Morgana from Persona 5.
Every time he said “but you are just a cat” i felt like that was still on brand for how a cat would actually act in that moment.
I can’t tell if he was trying to complain or sell the game, because now I just want to play it more because it sounds like they semi-realistically made a post apocolyptic cyberpunk game about a cat.
Just play A Street Cat’s Tale already. It’s all the things you said this game wasn’t.
Go back to LOL
someone gift Yahtzee one of the Garfield games if they’re on Steam or something
I enjoyed Stray a lot, but yeah I bought into it on the assumption that the entire hook was that you would play as a cat, doing dumb cat things and this “freeing the post apocalyptic robot society from an oppressive regime” story was something that was basically happening as an unintended consequence of your need to knock things off of shelves and shit in a box.
It’s good, but I’m glad it was as short.
Even though it has been out for a while, Yahtzee should do an ZP episode on MultiVersus. Not to mention, Soul Hackers 2 comes out this month and would be cool to se a ZP episode on that.
I’d like to argue a specific point you made; I felt that the random cat-naps were a beautiful way to give the player a way to take a break, go get a drink, while still staying in-world and not breaking immersion
And…. regarding that the character could have been anything and not necessarily a cat (in many places), I feel like that’s really important and true, because they managed to bring back the silent protagonist in a very modern game. You’re right; it doesn’t have to be a cat – the design was so good that it could be any mute character, at least regarding the story, and this is a good sign for future singleplayer games to make a resurgence. But the cat-like interactions are what sold it
But, I absolutely agree with the points about emotional context and especially the ending. That made me so mad. Of all the ‘people’ that could get to the top, the cat had by far the worst reason for doing so, and yet everyone selflessly sacrificed themselves for no reason instead
This game is perfect for mods
I can’t get over how they couldn’t get the cat right. The tail while the cat is walking around is all kinds of wrong and it gives me strong uncanny valley. That was their one job to get right and they fucked it up.
Wasn’t there a game like Concrete Jungle or something where you played a cat in post-apocalyptic Japan?
