3:17 “Adorable toe beans”
Things I never would have imagined Yahtzee saying.
I really expected Yahtz to find this a snacky and charming experience. But I guess it kinda missed his taste
it amazes me how some people in the gaming community/industry praise such non-games.
they had such an amazing idea for this game and then just fail in every possible way
That’s really bizarre and disappointing to hear. Making an emotional action game centred around a cat sounds incredibly easy to pull off, especially if you’re only pulling off for four hours. Why contextual jumping instead of straight platforming? You platform around with agility and impeccable balance and when you fuck up and fall off and your little cat avatar has to pretend like it meant to do that before looking at the camera in an accusing way? Awesome and occasionally hilarious. As for the emotional stuff, you get to tie that to interacting with NPCs for your own purposes, meowing at them to draw attention to certain points, cozying up to them to build their affection so they give you food or access to different areas for puzzle-solving, all the while they are visibly affected by your attentions and grow attached. You can return the affection because you’re a cat, be entirely nonplussed because you’re a cat, or betray them and leave them yowling while locked outside…. because you’re a cat. You choose how you feel and react and it’ll always be in character for a feline avatar.
Cat turf wars, disciplining dogs, warming the hearts of little disabled children and/or robots – no shortage of concepts to build content around.
Once upon a time there was a TV commercial from IKEA about replacing a desk lamp that continually tilted down. When the lamp is placed by the curb, tilting timed to orchestra music in a minor key and lit to evoke sadness and despair the narrator says, “Here you are feeling sorry for a broken lamp. That is because you are crazy. The new one is much better and not broken.”
I watch this video with my cat sitting beside me, staring…and judging.
My cat, Balerion the Dread, would have made a better protagonist. Protip: never name your cat after a Game of Thrones dragon. It might take that shit to heart. Balerion will climb up the cabinets and then pounce down on us, or the dogs. We can’t tell if it’s being playful and really good at the sneak attacks or if it’s trying to kill and eat us and just really bad at it.
Number one rule of storytelling should be “character guides story” but in so so many games now the mindset seems to be “marteking gimmick and trendy tropes guide everything”.
Felt that it was implied the cat was also a robot.
The drone tried to speak to the cat (for some reason, perhaps could detect a connection) but it did not speak the same code, so it changed it.)
Then the drone could communicate with it. The cat takes a lot of actions that are “intelligent” but dabbed with “how a cat would do it” because yes a robot cat would act like a cat when it could, since it would be programmed to do so.
But the cat has also existed for say 60000 years. so like the robots their intelligence has improved. It understands commands, it can manipulate its environment. BUT when cat potential happens it does that. (also it never eats)
The four cats are “resting” like a cat would, they go off (perhaps to look for humans to engage with)
The cats eyes also glow briefly at the end when it looks back. (either a sudden night vision glimmer? when its sitting in the sun? or showing its eyes are actually mechanic in some way.)
they also missed a great chance to make more cat related things, if the drone would aim with a laser to get the cat to do specific things. BUT it would not need to do this since the cat could understand what it was saying.
2/10
The kitty cat isn’t Chonk
So, he liked it?
i have not played this game but there seems to be some missed opportunities. read about a moment where the robot used a flashlight to help it in the dark? which seems strange, but it could also mean that the robot do not know that cats are supposed to see in the dark. That is a moment where they could actually made it so that you do not need too use that light and just go straight into the dark making the robot go “oh, never mind” or something.
Me thinks Yahtzee is being a little too nitpicky. It’s odd the cat seems to be more capable than a normal cat but we can assume it’s a gene modded cat of the future with a sci fi helper bot and the robots instantly recognise such magical bollocks in their world. The lack of emotion is hilarious but that’s never stopped lone hero protagonist games like Half Life 2.
What’s really missing is claws. How can cats not have claws? How can the lone hero not have a weapon and use it and agility to fight smart against the hordes of rat-things? It would keep with the theme that the cats of the future were gene modded to handle the pests of the future and they easily survived the fall of mankind.
The music collection sidequest is a strange one to criticize. The reward for bringing a robot music is that the robot plays you a song. Why wouldn’t that be the reward? Would it be a better game if you also got Quest Points ™️ and an arbitrary currency? That sort of BS is one of the things everyone hates about modern open world games.
Kind of remind me of the beginning of Kingdom Come (hurgh) Deliverance. The main character just stares blankly at their mother being killed
Kentucky Route Zero had a cat level but Yahtzee bailed before he got that far.
Yhatzee saying “adorable toe beans” needs to be it’s own clip.
4:25 Nonplussed means bevildered, Yahtzee you old chunk of coal.
Technically, you can collect pins and jazzy pearlescent backpack (that you can wear for 10 min because you get in at the end of the game).
Stray would have benefitted from being more like Untitled Goose Game. Have the point be complete certain tasks that a cat might want or do
